Check out this important and very relevant report out today by ASRA which our experts contributed to and which also points to our recent EEA #GovernanceinComplexity report. 'Rapidly enhancing our ability to assess and respond to systemic risk is vital for achieving a safer future for people, the planet, and all living ecosystems.'
🚨 New Report Alert 🚨 We’re excited to announce the launch of the "Facing Global Risks with Honest Hope" report. Co-developed by 50+ transdisciplinary experts from around the world, the authors call for a radical shift in how we assess and address interconnected #globalrisks and set out practical actions for governments, businesses, and communities. Reducing the use of #PFAS —known as #foreverchemicals— in clothing, furniture and other textile products, is important to increase recyclability and the transition to a more #circulareconomy according to our #EEABriefing published today. #Textiles are one of the biggest sources of #PFASpollution in Europe. Polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), a group of highly persistent chemicals, are widely used in many textile-based products including clothing, carpets and other household goods for waterproofing, oil, dirt and heat protection, and increased durability. However, they also persist over time and may accumulate in humans, animals and the environment, increasing the risk of serious health and environmental impacts. #MaterialStocks refers to natural resources used to make long-lasting products such as buildings, roads and heavy machinery. Out of the more than 8 billion tonnes of processed material entering the EU economy every year, around 40% is used to build and operate its material stocks and this percentage is increasing. 📈 #CircularEconomy can help minimize the environmental impacts from an increasing anthropogenic environment by, for example, promoting the use of secondary materials in material stocks. 🏗️🧱 Read more about it by visiting the European Environment Agency's Circularity Metrics Lab here: https://lnkd.in/duv2u3vv #EuropeanEnvironmentAgency 🇪🇺 #MaterialStocks #MaterialFlows

Today, 16 September, is #WorldOzoneDay to mark the #MontrealProtocol to phase out environmentally harmful #ozonedepletingsubstances (ODS). Did you know that the consumption of ODS covered by the Montreal Protocol has declined in the EU and worldwide by about 99% from 1986 to 2023. The remaining 1% reflects some industrial processes, firefighting, laboratory and analytical uses where alternatives are not yet widely available. The EEA has published new data, collected annually from companies, on the production, import, export, destruction, and use of ozone-depleting substances as raw materials in the EU. The data show how the EU has met its obligations under the Montreal Protocol and tracks progress on the more ambitious EU Ozone Regulation. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dhnXi_mP

#Fridayfacts: The growing production and consumption of plastics — worldwide and in Europe — is causing increasing environmental harm and impacting climate change. This includes marine litter, microplastics in the environment and GHGs from the plastics value chain. The top five item types found on European beaches in 2022 were all made of plastics. 🌍📉 Biodiversity at risk: Decline of common bird populations in the EU 📉🌍 Birds are sensitive to environmental pressures, making them key indicators of the health of our environment. Long-term monitoring across the EU shows a troubling decline in bird populations: 🔹 168 common birds: 14% decrease between 1990 and 2022 🔹 Farmland birds: 40% decrease 🔹 Forest birds: 3% decrease Despite efforts, reversing these declines by 2030 seems unlikely. Agricultural intensification, habitat loss, and other human-driven factors are putting enormous pressure on these species. To turn the tide, EU Member States must scale up existing conservation efforts and implement new restoration measures. The EU’s new Nature Restoration Law sets the stage for this work, but much more is needed to safeguard biodiversity. 🌿 Let's act now to protect our birds and ecosystems! 🌿 Check the Common bird indicator here: https://lnkd.in/dhHTPPcQ Photos: 🌍📉 Biodiversity at risk: Decline of common bird populations in the EU 📉🌍 Birds are sensitive to environmental pressures, making them key indicators of the health of our environment. Many thanks to our colleagues at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and Food Safety Authority of Ireland for organising this joint crisis preparedness exercise. We look forward to continuing and deepening our collaboration with EEA’s European partners to build and strengthen our joint capacity to respond to cross-border threats to health, with rapid risk assessment and communication. 🤝 🌍 #RiskAssessment #EUAgencies
We’ve just completed the 2024 #CrisisPreparedness Simulation in Dublin 🇮🇪, organised in collaboration with Food Safety Authority of Ireland This exercise was a valuable opportunity to strengthen crisis response efforts with EU Health and Food Safety, #EUAgencies (European Chemicals Agency, European Environment Agency, Europol, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), and 5 #MemberStates (France, Ireland, Belgium, Luxemburg and Denmark). Through joint rapid #RiskAssessment, we worked within the framework of the Serious Cross Border Health Threat Regulation to enhance our collective ability to handle health crises. #EUFoodSafety
