At Gehl, we put life at the center of urban design and masterplanning. As AI technologies develop and become embedded in our ways of working, we’ve been exploring how they can be used as a tool to enhance — rather than replace — the qualities that make us fundamentally human. 🧠💡 In August, Gehl hosted a workshop at The Conference 2024 that used storytelling, collaging, and an AI experiment to envision how future cities might feel. Responses from 30 participants pointed toward a future where cities make us feel calm and foster connections with nature and our communities. 😌 🌿 #gehlpeople #softtechnology #ai #futurecities #generativeai

Putting life at the center of urban design
Om os
At Gehl, we are committed to creating the future we want to live in. Gehl is a networked urban design and research consultancy, offering expertise in the fields of architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, and city planning. We address global trends using empirical analysis to design for social behavior that drives meaningful change. Our approach is iterative and holistic. We begin by working to understand the existing life of a space before we shape the built environment. It’s these existing activities, user groups, and behavior patterns that inform future visions and designs that invite public life to flourish. We work to create a future in which communities have control over their health and well-being; where inclusive neighborhoods and places are designed to encourage a sense of belonging and make it easier for people to take purposeful climate action.

Last month, Gehl’s director Sophia Schuff spoke to Parkly - Transforming Urban Spaces about how to put awe at the center of urban planning. 🤩 "I always go back to the rule of thumb that a wonderful city for all people is a city that prioritizes small children, vulnerable communities, and elderly residents. That might look like a lush, green, accessible, dense, safe, abundant, joyful city that allows for genuine moments of awe and reciprocity." 🤝 In the interview, Sophia shares valuable advice for cities looking to implement more tactical actions to make urban environments more livable. 💡 🌏 Find out more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/e2XtX3nZ #gehlpeople #citiesforpeople #humancentereddesign #publiclife #publicspace

The shape of our cities isn’t just a backdrop — it’s the hidden engine driving global greenhouse emissions. From transportation and embodied carbon to energy consumption and what we eat, neighborhood layouts dictate more than you think. 🏙 Join policy and design leaders from Gehl and RMI in an interactive discussion on making this vision a reality. 🙌 We’ll focus on what really matters: new policies, fresh funding approaches, and the human-centered design needed to decarbonize our cities and build neighborhoods we’ll want to live in. 🌱 See you at this year’s Climate Week NYC on 25 September at 1:30pm. We’ve been collaborating with The Bentway in Toronto on a study to measure the impact of their summer art programs on public life and social connection. ☀ Our team at Gehl saw this up close at the Roller Skate Party last month. The Bentway’s programming is redefining what it means to connect communities, turning the public space underneath the Gardiner Expressway — a once-imposing barrier — into a vibrant thread that weaves people together. 🤝 Stay tuned for more on how public spaces can be a key ingredient in addressing the loneliness epidemic. We’ll be sharing insights from our collaboration with The Bentway and the University of Toronto School of Public Health in the coming months. 🔜 🚀 #gehlpeople #socialinfrastructure #publicspace #spatialdesign #socialconnection

How do plants, birds, and pollinators fit into the modern workplace? Can a walking meeting amid monarch butterflies boost creativity and engagement? And how does working alongside nature change how we see ourselves in the bigger picture? 🐝 Second Nature, Gehl, and Creative Denmark discuss tangible approaches for integrating ecological benefits into real estate from the ground up, and how “high-performance nature” can supercharge workplaces. 🍀 We’ll explore the real value nature adds to urban space — plus, get an inside look at the methods used to blend social and ecological spaces into something greater than the sum of their parts. Register to attend via the link below. 👇 We hope to see you in New York City on 25 September at 3:30pm. 🙌 https://lu.ma/qj9v0s0z #gehlpeople #creativedenmark #secondnature #ClimateWeekNYC

Downtowns aren’t just places for work — they’re where cities come alive, when designed and programmed from a people-first perspective! 🌆 From city-led capital projects to the creation of public spaces (big or small) designed to foster inclusive connection, downtowns play a major role in boosting mental well-being and community vibrancy, all of which bolsters the economy. 🤝 Catch Gehl’s Anna Muessig and Candice Ji at the International Downtown Association conference in Seattle on September 13. They’ll be speaking on two panels: Inclusive Downtown Recovery through the Public Realm at 2:15pm in Room 501, 5th Floor, with Kevin Green (President & CEO, Midtown Alliance), Joyce Tang (Leader of Greater Downtown, City of Calgary), and Anita Cozart (Director, DC Office of Planning). Combating Loneliness through Public Space Programming & Design at 12:45pm in Willapa, 5th Room, with Rico Quirindongo (Director of the Office of Planning and Community Development, City of Seattle), Mallory Thatch (Senior Program Manager: Placekeeping and Community Initiatives, Brownsville Community Justice Center), Krista Nightengale (Executive Director, Better Block Foundation), and Patrick Raue (Clinical Psychologist and Professor, University of Washington - School of Medicine). Do you have other ideas on how downtowns can be designed for more vibrancy, inclusivity, and community health?
