MASH Makes hosted leaders from across the textile industry at our R&D centre in Khopoli last week to demonstrate how agricultural residues can be transformed into renewable energy and carbon removal solutions. By producing biochar and other outputs through this process, we can support sustainable cotton production —reducing carbon emissions, conserving water, and enhancing biodiversity. This collaboration was inspired by Global Change Award, an innovation challenge by the H&M Foundation. Since 2015, the award has identified and backed groundbreaking ideas to make fashion sustainable and circular. The next phase of the challenge focuses on decarbonising the industry to accelerate fashion’s journey toward net-zero emissions by 2050. Thanks to Milkywire, for spotlighting our progress in their Climate Transformation Fund Progress Report! The report highlights how, in the past year, we have scaled biochar production by 150%, distributing 1,500 tonnes across Indian farmland. This has helped contribute to carbon removal and allowed farmers to increase yields, especially in drought-prone areas. We’re also proud to have created 50+ jobs at our Udupi facility, empowering local communities while advancing sustainable farming. Our Udupi plant in India recently received ISCC EU certification for biofuel production after an audit by Baltic Control Certification A/S. This is our second ISCC EU certification and the first for our production site Udupi, which also produces EBC certified biochar. This dual certification allows us to deliver high-quality, sustainable fuel and carbon removal solutions, ready for commercial sale in the EU and beyond. 💡 What’s next? 🌱 Farmers in Eastern Maharashtra are battling climate change, but our biochar is giving them a powerful solution — boosting crop yields for at least three seasons with just one application. Biochar is a charcoal-like substance that's added to soil to improve its quality, helping it retain water and nutrients while also capturing carbon. Our season third-season trials showed that just one application improves yields for at least three seasons. And as you can see below, farmers see and feel these results on their bottom line. Farmers in the Ambajogai region, where the trial took place, are under intense pressure due to climate change. Rainfall in the region has dramatically declined over the past three decades, with an average decrease of 2.31 mm per year. This makes traditional farming risky, especially for crops like soybeans and chickpeas, which are susceptible to low soil moisture and poor germination rates. We're grateful that our biochar is helping Irfan and the farmers at MANAVLOK(Marathwada Navnirman Lokayat) to grow more and earn more, even under harsh conditions. 🌾 Want to use biochar on your fields? BIOCHAR: Season 3 – The results are in! We’re excited to share the latest findings from our ongoing biochar trials in Maharashtra. We recently wrapped up Season 3. Here's a quick recap: 🌿 Season 1: Chickpea yields increased by 25%. 🌿 Season 2: Soybean yields rose by 110% 🌿 Season 3: Chickpea yields rose by 14.3% The data shows biochar, a carbon-rich material made from organic waste, continues to enhance crop yields and soil resilience when compared to a control group. Even more impressive - yield changes due to drought were less severe in biochar-treated plots. We’re not stopping here. Season 4 is in progress, and farmers in the region have reported good weather and optimal rainfall.
