NMD Pharma #ResearchScientists, Jeppe Blichfeldt Winther and Jesper Emil Jakobsgaard, recently published a peer-reviewed Journal Club article in the prestigious The Journal of Physiology Society’s Journal of Physiology. Jeppe and Jesper both have an educational background in Sport Science from Aarhus University and several years of experience in research related to skeletal muscle and exercise physiology. In this article they discuss recent findings on skeletal muscle fatigue and the interaction between metabolic stress and skeletal muscle fibre excitability. Whilst #neuromuscular disorders often hold distinct underlying pathological mechanisms of skeletal muscle weakness, such clinical symptoms may become exacerbated during repeated muscle activation. As we continue to develop novel treatments to improve skeletal muscle function, important scientific discourse like this will inform our understanding of the mechanisms of acute fatigue during repeated muscle contractile activity. As part of SMA Awareness month, at NMD Pharma, we are proud to participate in SMA Europe’s 2024 #WeAreOne campaign, which aims to unite the different generations and communities living with spinal muscular atrophy (#SMA) with one shared dream: to create a better world for all people living with this rare #NeuromuscularDisease… “All together. Today marks the start of spinal muscular atrophy (#SMA) awareness month, a global movement that aims to shine a spotlight on SMA. SMA is a rare genetic #NeuromuscularDisease characterized by degeneration of the nerve cells in the spinal cord, leading to progressive muscle weakness and atrophy. Despite exciting new drug treatments that have helped make an incredibly positive impact on the lives of those with SMA, residual challenges remain such as muscle weakness and fatiguability, impaired mobility, and risk of falls, swallowing difficulties and potential respiratory problems. CureSMA (#CureSMA) has grown to be the largest network of individuals, families, clinicians, and research scientists in the US working together to advance SMA research and support the full SMA community. They note “in order to find a cure for SMA, we know its crucial to attack SMA from all sides.” (SMA Drug Pipeline - Cure SMA) NMD Pharma is conducting a Phase 2 study of NMD670, an oral skeletal muscle targeted therapy that is being studied in adults with SMA to improve muscle power and endurance, so each person can accomplish more in their daily lives. We’re proud to have published a paper in the peer reviewed journal Neuromuscular Disorders on the role of recovery of acetylcholine release in compromised #neuromuscular function. In the #publication, we explore the motor nerve’s capacity to sustain acetylcholine release to support synaptic and contractile function during repeated contractions under conditions of pharmacological induced compromised neuromuscular transmission. This work helps us to gain new insights into neuromuscular function and dysfunction, furthering our understanding of the physiology associated with #NeuromuscularDiseases and aiding us to develop novel treatments to improve muscle function and quality of life for patients. Did you know that there is a global patient registry where those impacted by myasthenia gravis (#MG) can confidentially and securely enter their health information in a questionnaire survey to help address the many unknowns and questions about MG? MG is a rare, chronic neuromuscular and autoimmune disease that affects more than 700,000 people worldwide and is characterized primarily by muscle weakness and fatigue. There is currently no cure, and current treatment options, while often helpful, are neither fully effective nor well-tolerated by the majority of patients. The MGFA Global MG Patient Registry, provided by the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, Inc., (#MGFA), aims to answer many of the unknowns and questions associated with MG by providing researchers with patient-reported data that could help to discover and support treatments that have the potential to greatly improve the lives of those with the disease. This registry is an ongoing study that is truly inclusive and open to seronegative, ACHR+, LRP4+, and MUSK+ MG patients with ocular and generalized MG. Any MG patient over 18 years of age can participate, meaning it will not exclude certain patients like other research studies.
