In the EU, one of the largest consumers of fish in the world, people struggle to identify sustainable seafood due to lax consumer information regulations for processed products like canned tuna and sardines. While fresh and frozen seafood products have stricter consumer information requirements, processed items lack crucial information such as species, origin, fishing gear, and production method. The #FollowTheFish movement, which includes key stakeholders from the seafood supply chain is urging the European Commission to step up and change these rules! We want information on ALL seafood products, also in restaurants. Let’s demand transparency so EU citizens can make sustainable choices and avoid products associated with illegal practices. It’s time to defend EU citizen’s right to #FollowtheFish from sea to plate! 🌊🐟. Learn more 👉 https://bit.ly/4ealELn

We are pleased to announce that a group of NGOs working on marine issues, (BirdLife Europe and Central Asia, Blue Marine Foundation, ClientEarth, Danmarks Naturfredningsforening, Deutsche Stiftung Meeresschutz, Deutsche Umwelthilfe, Ecologistas en Acción, North Sea Foundation, Oceana, The Fisheries Secretariat, Sciaena and Seas At Risk), has submitted our response to the European Commission’s 2024 consultation on sustainable fishing in the EU. 🐟 📰 Our detailed policy briefing outlines key recommendations to ensure that the 2025 fishing opportunities foster long-term ocean health, rebuild fish populations, and enhance ecosystem resilience in the face of climate change. We urge the Commission to prioritise these objectives in their negotiations and decision-making processes with the AgriFish Council. As European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is about to publish mission letters to the newly-designated EU Commissioners, Brussels-based marine NGOs call on her to outline a clear, overarching mission to the new EU Commissioner for the Ocean to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect biodiversity, improve citizen health, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the ocean and the economic activities that depend on it. It's time to lead the way for a healthy ocean! 🌊 ➡ https://lnkd.in/dnnHzbpe WWF Central and Eastern Europe Seas At Risk Surfrider Foundation Europe ClientEarth BirdLife Europe and Central Asia

The Nature Restoration Law entered into force yesterday! It’s a truly historic moment as the law sets legally-binding targets for Member States to restore 20% of land areas and 20% of seas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050. This day follows years of advocacy and campaigning from the #RestoreNature movement to get the Nature Restoration Law across the finish line. 📽️ Watch our video recap of the campaign and let’s work together to our rivers, forests, seas, wetlands & green our cities all around Europe 🦋

According to EU laws, its citizens cannot support or benefit from illegal fishing. However, Member States do not have a comprehensive system in place to identify foreign ownership of fishing vessels. Many companies, including those with EU owners, hide behind complex corporate structures to exploit fisheries resources in non-EU countries, where controls might be weaker. Fighting illegal fishing requires acting against those who ultimately benefit from it, and the solution is making key information public. 📰Read the Financial Times article with Oceana’s insights: https://lnkd.in/dpfiVTwd
