Thailand has over 17 million rubber smallholders who help make products like tyres and latex gloves. However, traditional rubber farming causes problems such as deforestation and high pesticide use, affecting the environment and communities.   Smallholders, such as Wanida Heedyim, are now turning to sustainable methods and technology with the help of AGRIAC, a local non-profit. AGRIAC's app provides farmers with market data and better prices while cutting out costly middlemen.   By following the Forest Stewardship Council standards, these smallholders can gain higher prices. They also attract more members to join them and help protect the environment. For more details, watch the video. https://lnkd.in/g9tvxz-r

🎤 Our Senior Carbon Project Specialist, María Sosa Llopis, recently took the stage at a key conference in Spain, highlighting ways for farmers to engage in voluntary carbon markets, covering both the opportunities and responsibilities they would face. The event was organised by the Regional Institute for Agri-Food Research and Development of Castile-La Mancha and Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias - INIA. Maria also introduced the SMURF - The forest owners' project forestry methodologies for afforestation/reforestation and improved forest management, which are currently being prepared for submission to the European Commission to qualify under the upcoming EU Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF). 🔍 During the event, speakers shared insights into practical solutions for carbon removal. Miguel Angel from Spain’s AlVelAl restoration project illustrated how improved agricultural practices can effectively boost carbon sequestration and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 🌍 Additionally, Magdalena Gálvez Djouma, a representative from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food provided updates on CRCF progress, focusing on the upcoming Q4 2024 release and its implications for the agriculture sector. The event concluded with a vibrant panel discussion featuring Maria, Miguel, Magdalena, representatives from INIA and two wineries. High audience engagement reflected the sector’s keen interest in exploring the next steps in carbon and ecosystem service strategies. 💡 As a proud partner in the EU-funded SMURF project, Preferred by Nature is leading the development of a Payment for Ecosystem Services framework, focusing on carbon and biodiversity. We’re also incorporating a digital platform that leverages blockchain technology to enhance transparency and trust. 🌳 The Maliau Basin, one of the world’s last untouched rainforests in Borneo, is a critical ecosystem that plays a vital role in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. Since the late 1990s, Preferred by Nature has been working alongside the Sabah Foundation to protect this unique ecosystem from threats like logging and coal mining. 🌱 Despite the challenges, the dedication of conservationists and researchers in the Maliau Basin demonstrates the potential for successful ecosystem restoration. 🌍 These efforts highlight the importance of preserving irreplaceable ecosystems for future generations. 📹 Watch the video to dive deeper: https://ow.ly/R4gc50TU9wu
