Tune in to Kulturen på P1: Schmidt Hammer Lassen's Jette Birkeskov Mogensen elaborates on San Quentin's transformation In a recent interview with "Kulturen på P1", a national radio programme on DR - Danmarks Radio, our Project Manager and Associate Partner, Jette Birkeskov Mogensen, explained our architectural contribution to the transformation of San Quentin. In the interview, Jette elaborates on how thoughtful architecture can foster learning and connectivity within the San Quentin community, helping to prepare incarcerated individuals for a dignified and meaningful life after their release. Inspired by the Nordic Model, the transformation of San Quentin aims to become a beacon of rehabilitation and reintegration that will serve as a source of inspiration well beyond its walls. Thank you to Karen Secher and Chris Pedersen for inviting us into the DR studio here in Copenhagen! The project is being realised in a collaboration between SHL - Schmidt Hammer Lassen, DLR Group, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., Vanir the CDCR and the Governor's Office in California. Curtin University's TL Robertson Library transformation wins Social and Community Infrastructure Award 2024! We are very excited and proud to share that Curtin University's TL Robertson Library has won the prestigious Social and Community Infrastructure Award at the 2024 Urban Development Institute of Australia (WA) (UDIA) Award for Excellence. In collaboration with our local partner Hames Sharley, we’ve transformed the TL Robertson Library with a strong focus on social connection and community engagement. The judges of the jury emphasised that the success of the transformation is reflected by the strong utilisation of the space, not only by university students, but the wider community. We are very happy that the Social and Community Infrastructure Award recognises leadership and innovation in delivering services and/or social infrastructure developments. Curtin University's TL Robertson Library received the award on 14th September in Perth. This win is the second this year and follows the TL Robertson Library's success at the Australian Institute of Architects Awards in June 2024, where the library transformation won the Sustainable Architecture Award and received a commendation for Educational Architecture. Fisketorvet’s Next Chapter: From Shopping Centre to Vibrant Urban Hub Copenhagen City Council has approved the zoning plan for Fisketorvet - Copenhagen Mall, marking a significant milestone in the transformation of one of the city’s best-located shopping centres. The plan sets the stage for integrating Fisketorvet into Copenhagen’s urban fabric, transforming it from an introverted shopping centre into a dynamic, outward-facing urban destination. Initially located on the city’s outskirts, Copenhagen has since developed around Fisketorvet, positioning the mall in a prime location at the heart of a major transport hub close to Copenhagen Harbour. In the future, Fisketorvet will play a central role in fostering social and commercial life in the flourishing area, which is expected to attract even more residents with the development of Jernbanebyen in the coming years. The 42,000 m² expansion will introduce new functions, including office space, a hotel, and residential buildings. The project focuses on creating synergies both within Fisketorvet’s internal functions and between the shopping centre and its surrounding areas. This holistic approach aims to make Fisketorvet a catalyst for urban life, offering a wider range of services and a more vibrant public realm. The transformation of Fisketorvet is the result of a visionary collaboration between SHL - Schmidt Hammer Lassen, SLA, Artelia Denmark and Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield that reimagines the shopping centre as a more diversified and dynamic experience. We are honoured to share that our project “Pilefacade” has been selected to receive the "Implement Materials" grant from the Arkitektforeningen (Danish Architects Association) and DREYERS FOND. “Pilefacade” is a collaboration between Schmidt Hammer Lassen, PILEBYG a/s, #moow & Staticus. The project explores multiple ways that locally grown willow can be used in premanufactured facades. Unlike typical construction timbers, willow grows in vast quantities in Denmark, and while it was a common construction material in the Viking times, it has been overlooked in industrial-age construction methods. Willow is fast growing, sequestering carbon at a higher rate than most biogenic construction materials, and is known for its phytoremediation properties, and decontaminating soils. Our effort to scale this material in premanufactured facades opens new possibilities for use in multi-storey buildings, taking advantage of the precision and quality of off-site manufacturing techniques. This represents a new field for willow and other biogenic materials that provides an opportunity for large-scale implementation. The grant allows us to continue the development of willow as a new biogenic building material which can replace more conventional and CO2-heavy products. The grant work will investigate: · Thick willow branch sections for laminated structural beams and boards · Willow offcuts for fibre insulation and boards · Thin willow branch sections for rain-screen cladding Implement Materials is part of the Agenda Earth initiative, which highlights and envisions the future built environment and landscapes while exploring the legislative frameworks necessary to make it possible. The initiative is led by the Danish Architects Association and is continuously developed in collaboration with the Dreyers Foundation and the Danish Bar and Law Society, with support from the Dreyers Foundation. TV 2 Danmark covers Schmidt Hammer Lassen’s work realising Californian Governor Gavin Newsom’s vision. Yesterday, our CEO, Sanne Wall-Gremstrup, was invited to Danish national TV-channel TV2’s Newsroom to discuss our campus project at San Quentin. In conversation with Poul Erik Skammelsen, Sanne shared how this campus forms a key part of the transformation of one of the most notorious prisons in the US. The project aims to turn San Quentin into a model for rehabilitation and education that could inspire change across the entire American prison system. This visionary project is a central ambition for California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, who plans to see it completed within his term. With a DKK 1.3 billion investment, the governor is sending a strong message—it’s about investing in people and giving them a second chance in life, thus breaking with the disheartening narrative from Johnny Cash’s song about San Quentin from 1969. Education is crucial to securing and maintaining employment, and the new campus is the first step in making San Quentin a place focused on rehabilitation and reintegration, setting an example for other prisons across the country. Sanne rounds off the interview stating that "this is one of the most ambitious, visionary, and meaningful projects we’ve undertaken in recent years." Groundbreaking is planned for the end of September, with completion expected in early 2026. The project is being developed in collaboration with McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., DLR Group, The CDCR, Vanir, and the Governor’s Office. A year ago today, we celebrated the topping-out ceremony for The Dome, a Skyspace by James Turrell at ARoS. Many Aarhus residents stopped by for an exclusive preview of the Dome, which, along with a semi-underground 1000 m² gallery, will elevate ARoS—one of Northern Europe's largest modern art museums —to The Next Level. Since then, construction has been progressing steadily, and now, a year later, the dome has been fully cast, and interior work is well underway. Skilled craftsmen are painting the vast dome walls and laying 20,000 tiles on the floor. On Level 3 of ARoS, access to the underground entrance of the gallery is being established. We can’t wait to welcome you all inside once the project is completed in 2025! How can insights from the past help us plan the cities of the future? Today, we're at the Oslo Urban Week 2024 kickoff event, set in the city’s beautiful historic centre, Kvadraturen. As we look toward the future of urban development, it’s clear that we need to rethink how we plan our cities—not just for the well-being of people, but for the health of our shared planet. Sometimes, looking to the past offers fresh perspectives, allowing forgotten ideas to re-emerge in a new light. This year’s theme, “Back to the Future,” highlights how insights from the past can help shape tomorrow’s cities. The photo below is from the panel discussion moderated by Rasmus Reinvang, CEO at OMA and Maren Bjerkeng, Head of Architecture and Urban Development at Aspelin Ramm. An interesting discussion between architects Alison Brooks and Peter Butenschøn and climate activist Andreas Magnusson that explores how to balance modern urban development, cultural heritage, sustainable growth and densification, and the importance of community involvement. We'll be in Oslo throughout Oslo Urban Week, participating in various events and gaining knowledge across professions. If you're also in town, we'd love to connect—don’t hesitate to reach out! #shl #schmidthammerlassen #oslourbanweek #oslourbanweek2024 #urbandevelopment #urbanplanning #urbanism #shapingthecitiesoftomorrow

Dezeen features our project Beijing Performing Arts Center - a 125.000 m2 Opera, Concert Hall and Theatre along the UNESCO Heritage site the Grand Canal in China. Conceived as ‘containers of cultures’ the Beijing Performing Arts Center represents a regional reversal for the famous district of Tongzhou. Once the stopping point for boats along the Grand Canal on their way into Beijing, the canal side was scattered with traditional volumetric storehouses containing goods to be delivered to the citizens. The design of the Beijing Performing Arts Center rekindles the heritage of the UNESCO-listed site - slanting roofs pay homage to the traditional storehouses, while the building’s pleated, fan-like exterior resonates with the iconic sails of the original transport boats. Transformation is a conversation. In transforming our built environment, we don’t just work with physical structures; we engage with places that hold significance in our collective memory and have an established presence in the city. Even after a place loses its original function, it has value. It carries strong memories and local ownership. It is these intangible qualities that must be identified and carried into the new project, ensuring the building contributes (or maintains its presence) to the physical and mental maps of the community. There lies the true potential and challenge of any transformation project—there is something to preserve and something to build upon. This friction demands an approach that remains open to adjustments as the project evolves. The more we uncover, the better we understand the building. As new opportunities arise during this process, transformation should be gradual and considered, allowing for organic growth within a robust conceptual framework, and leaving space for the conversation to continue.
