Well done, Baltics! But really disappointing to see Denmark and Sweden lagging. There’s definitely room for improvement in leveraging stock options as a competitive advantage across certain countries. The report from 'Not Optional' (see link further down) on stock options competitiveness, shared via Henrik Torstensson, clearly shows the Nordics falling behind. As a Nordic founder, it’s frustrating to read and experience this. But it's not all bad news: - Seven European countries match or beat the U.S. benchmark for stock option policy. - With European competitiveness in the spotlight following the Draghi Report, Europe’s three largest economies, Germany, France, and the UK, have reformed stock option policies to match or exceed the U.S. benchmark. - Stock options are now on the EU agenda, with institutions recognizing the benefit of a pan-European approach (I've signed this already). Four years ago, we launched our first freemium plan at Secure Privacy with big dreams and caffeine-fueled optimism. We wanted to make privacy accessible to everyone, and to truly democratize privacy compliance. But, as we quickly learned, "free" comes at a price. Our small, bootstrapped team was overwhelmed. Support requests piled up, our infrastructure strained, and our bank account was anything but happy. We found ourselves helping thousands of users, but the business itself was struggling to stay afloat. Classic startup mistake: we’d confused user growth with sustainable growth. So, instead of giving up on freemium, we took a step back to really understand what we needed to make it work. It’s tough when: - You’re running lean on support. - You can’t gather meaningful feedback from all sign-ups. - Product-market fit is still evolving. - You have a complex product or a small target market. - Cash flow is tight, or acquisition costs are high. - You lack a clear upgrade path to paid features. - You’re positioned as a premium brand or operate in a regulated industry. Freemium can on the other hand work extremely well if: - You have strong support infrastructure. - Product-market fit is clear. - Feedback can fuel growth and improvement. - Clear path to premium features. - The market has room to scale, and your product is intuitive. Today, we’re not just launching another free plan. We’re introducing a way for businesses to start their privacy compliance journey sustainably.
