What is your favorite additive manufacturing technology and why? My personal favorite technology is SLS and here is why: - Low per part cost: SLS 3D printing doesn't require any support structures as the power is self-supporting. This means there is minimum waste material and all the unfused powder can be recycled back into the machine to be re-printed. - Functional materials: The most common material to print with using SLS is a nylon based material which is a very functional material suitable for functional prototypes and end use applications. Other functional materials include glass and fibre reinforced nylons, TPUs, PP etc. - Uniform finish: As the part are self supported and no supports need removing from the parts you get good uniform finish on the parts. - Isotropic parts: SLS parts are isotropic, meaning they have equal strength in every direction. This is often not always the case with 3D printed parts particularly with FDM/FFF parts where delamination can occur when there is poor layer-to-layer adhesion in the Z direction. Isotropic again means parts are more suitable for functional end-use applications. - Higher volume printing: SLS is self supporting which enables the parts to be nested making it suitable for printing volumes of parts. Not only can you maximize the X and Y of the build volume but you can also stack parts in the Z to fill the whole printing volume. - Part complexity - Forget the design constraints of traditional manufacturing processes. SLS allows you to print complex geometries and clever designs such as print-in-place interlocking parts such as hinges reducing the need for post assembly of parts. - Post processing - SLS parts can be easily post processed with a wide range of finishing steps including dying, vapour smoothing, painting, media blasting etc. which allows you to finish the parts to your desired standard.
