COP29 is less than two weeks away with daily updates and we are rounding up the news from the last week: ➡️ Participant turnout: Over 32,000 people are registered for COP29, underscoring its global importance. ➡️ Climate Finance Action Fund: Azerbaijan introduced a Climate Finance Action Fund with a $1 billion target for contributions from fossil fuel companies, but concerns linger over its voluntary nature. ➡️ EU’s stance: The EU has solidified its negotiating position, committed to keeping global warming within 1.5°C of pre-industrial levels. However, activists argue that these ambitions lack clear deadlines to phase out fossil fuels or sufficient financial commitments for alternative energy. ➡️ Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe demands: CAN Europe calls for COP29 to signal a firm commitment to phase out coal by 2030, gas by 2035, and oil by 2040. They note gaps in financing the transition to sustainable energy and adapting to climate impacts. ➡️ EU climate finance goals: EU finance ministers are pushing for continued contributions towards the $100 billion climate adaptation fund for developing countries, calling for new donor nations, including China. ➡️ Impact of US elections: The US presidential election could influence COP29. If former president Donald Trump were re-elected, it may prompt US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement again, leaving the remaining 194 ratifying countries as part of a more isolated effort. ➡️ Upcoming biodiversity talks: Following COP29 Azerbaijan, UN biodiversity talks will convene in December, parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will meet to address further environmental issues. COP29 presents a blend of progressive sustainability efforts and complex challenges. As Azerbaijan seeks to position itself as a champion of sustainability, the lingering dependence on fossil fuels raises questions. Meanwhile, the EU’s climate goals and COP29’s outcome will be essential in determining the summit’s impact on future climate action. #COP29 #Sustainability #News

COP16: A turning point for global biodiversity? The 16th Conference of Parties on Global Biodiversity (COP16) is currently underway in Cali, Colombia, marking the first major global meeting since the 2022 Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). With 196 countries signed on, the goal is clear: halt and reverse nature loss by 2030. Key themes include the urgent need to: ➡️ Fully implement the GBF and move swiftly towards its goals. ➡️ Address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution in a holistic, integrated way. ➡️ Make peace with nature by embracing sustainable solutions. ➡️ The EU is playing a leading role, pushing for decisive action, championing initiatives to implement the GBF, and providing financial support to help partners meet these ambitious targets. Some key takeaways: 🟢 Global cooperation is essential to tackling the biodiversity crisis. 🟢 Nature-based solutions are crucial for mitigating climate change and restoring ecosystems. 🟢 Preserving nature brings economic benefits, from sustainable resource management to boosting livelihoods through restored ecosystems. As we look to the outcomes of COP16, it’s clear that integrated and collaborative approaches will be key to safeguarding our planet's biodiversity for future generations. New! Biodiversity guide for investors: The growing importance of biodiversity in investment strategies Matter's Director Sustainability Data Cédric Olivares-Jirsell, CFA has contributed to a brand new comprehensive guide with CFA UK's Sustainability Community. The guide provides important insights on why biodiversity is essential for investors and how to integrate it into your investment approach. “While many investors are beginning to understand the importance of climate factors, the integration of nature-related considerations into investment decisions has lagged. The efforts by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) could be pivotal in changing this, acting as a catalyst for incorporating biodiversity concerns into mainstream investment strategies." As the world increasingly focuses on sustainability, these are key insights to why biodiversity should be part of your strategy: ▶️ Biodiversity underpins stable ecosystems: Healthy ecosystems provide resources that humanity depends on, from clean water to food. Understanding biodiversity helps investors assess risks and opportunities tied to ecosystem health. ▶️ Key metrics for assessing impact: Investors can gauge the impact of their investments through metrics like species diversity, population sizes, and habitat extent—vital indicators of ecosystem health. ▶️ Climate change and biodiversity are deeply connected: As climate change accelerates the loss of biodiversity, investors must account for climate-related risks and opportunities in tandem with biodiversity. ▶️ Human reliance on nature: From survival to economic activity, human wellbeing is intertwined with nature. Investors have a responsibility to factor in their impact on ecosystems and invest in ways that support biodiversity. ▶️ Frameworks shaping the future: The TNFD (Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures) is emerging as a critical framework for reporting on nature-related risks and opportunities. Investors need to be aware of this, along with evolving EU regulations, as they will shape both reporting and investment decisions. ▶️ Tools to guide sustainable investing: A range of frameworks, standards, and indices are now available to guide investors on ESG issues, including biodiversity. These tools help investors integrate biodiversity considerations into their strategies and reporting. The guide highlights the increasing importance of embedding biodiversity into investment strategies. By doing so, investors can better assess their impact, set measurable targets, and report on their progress. Those who proactively understand and address biodiversity in their portfolios will not only manage risks more effectively but also unlock new opportunities and contribute to a sustainable future.
