World Health Organization has launched the 2025 Emergency Appeal for #Ukraine seeking $110 million to provide life-saving health care, sustain essential services and support Ukraine’s health system recovery.   Nearly 3 years since the full-scale war began in Ukraine, the humanitarian crisis has reached a scale of undeniable severity, with 12,7 million people in urgent need of humanitarian aid. Among them, 9,2 million require medical assistance and 3 million face critical health needs - these are people who simply cannot afford to wait.   Our plan includes emergency care, public health surveillance and digital health innovations like telemedicine to overcome staff shortages and infrastructure damage.   The stakes couldn’t be higher. Ukraine’s health system is under siege, and millions are struggling to access care. WHO is working to save lives, but we cannot do it alone. The human toll behind these numbers is staggering, with countless lives depending on our ability to respond. WHO is committed to ensuring access to vital health services, including emergency and trauma care, aiming to reduce mortality, preserve life-saving services, and support health system recovery. To achieve this, WHO has launched the 2025 Ukraine Emergency Appeal seeking $68.4 million for immediate health needs, with an additional $41.6 million required for broader health system recovery, bringing the total funding to $110 million. Key objectives include: 🔹 Reaching 3 million people in conflict-affected areas 🔹 Strengthening emergency medical services (EMS) and trauma care 🔹 Ensuring continuity of essential primary health care (PHC) 🔹 Enhancing coordination and improving health data management 🔹 Addressing health security risks, including extreme weather and CBRN threats WHO’s strategy focuses on the sustainability of health services, including rehabilitation, public health surveillance, and vital health system reforms. “From a pregnant woman fearing for her unborn child during birth to an elderly man struggling with deteriorating mental health to a 3-year-old boy who has missed out on basic immunization – WHO aims to support them all in 2025, working closely with the Ministry of Health and other partners,” said Dr Hans Henri P. I am deeply honored to begin my second term as WHO Regional Director for Europe, following today’s decision of World Health Organization’s Executive Board. I warmly thank all the members of the Executive Board for their trust and support. With humility and a strong sense of responsibility, I take on this mandate – fully committed to working in partnership to advance our shared vision for the region, especially in these times of crisis and uncertainty. The unanimous support by WHO/Europe Member States is a profound mark of trust. I recognize the high expectations placed upon me and I am ready to meet them head-on – driven by energy, experience and an exceptional team of executive directors. Together, we will build on lessons from the past 5 years, always upholding fairness to our staff – WHO’s greatest asset. I’ve reaffirmed my commitments, knowing I can count on the support of our Member States - and that of my big brother, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, whose guidance has meant so much to me. Our goal is clear: to ensure WHO Regional Office for Europe is future-proofed with the ambitious new European Programme of Work – #EPW2, which we have started co-creating with our Member States. Our partners at the World Cancer Research Fund acknowledge the importance of Nordic alcohol monopolies as an effective way to reduce alcohol consumption and harms. Dr Giota Mitrou, Executive Director of Research and Policy at the World Cancer Research Fund, says: “The Nordic model of prioritising health over profit through the use of alcohol monopolies is a clear lesson to other governments in the importance of policy in public health.
