Here, the gnomes lead us through the village. What sights there are! Small burrows, unbeknownst to passerby, lay entry to underground passageways that sprawl into cozy little gnome homes. Fairies bounce about, illuminating the abundant toadstools. A couple of them flit playfully past an elderly gnome weaving a basket.

Commune of the Gnomes

A feast for us is prepared by the gnomes, and before dining, they show us a celebratory tune for the Commune.

|
As night fell, the gnomes led everyone of the forest ilk deeper, deeper into mysterious lands. Mushrooms painted the ground at foot, as if splattered by the massive pines around us deep in these northern woods. "Land of Elves & Gnomes" was played as the gnomes told us of their history and lore.

The Trolls Are Near...

But alas! As we were speaking of the ways of the forest, we were come upon by a nasty group of cave trolls! Like a flash, the fire went out entirely. All the fairies stopped dancing. There was not a sound to be heard as the gnomes led us away from the reeking trolls. The trolls were disoriented and stormed away, shouting vile threats into the pitch-black air.

|
Quietly, all the gnomes grouped together. They decided to send everyone home, save for a group of well respected and particularly clever gnomes. Thus, they sent away into the night, with a pitter-patter, to find the troll nest and scare them away forever.

The gnomes dance in delight! For the trolls have been scared away from their nest, and the land was safe again. But there was a long way home, and it was black as pitch in the forest...

The gnomes need not fear. Though the path home is long, the light of the fae will guide them there...

Wisest Watcher Waiting

The wisest of all was set to keep watch for the return of the heroic gnomes.
"Get the children!"
The bells are chimed, the fires are lit, and the whole Nisse village comes running from their homes to greet the homecoming folk.

These Woods Are Safe

|
The return of the gnomes marks the end to a successful Commune! We have learned much from these mysterious creatures.
The woods are safe once more.

At this point, Fief II is a classic of the genre and the DS revival scene. It honestly doesn't get better than this, just other than. The orchestration is beautiful, the instrumentation is playful and appropriate, and the entire album captures a moment in time long forgotten or along another dimension. II by Fief is wonderful and deserves the praise heaped upon it.
