🌍 Did you know? Climate change is causing whale sharks, the world's largest fish, to move to new areas! By 2100, their core habitats could shift over 1,000 km due to rising ocean temps. Sadly, this means they'll be crossing paths with big ships more often, putting them at even greater risk. Many of the whale sharks tagged by the Galapagos Whale Shark Project already show signs of injuries from vessel strikes, like damaged dorsal fins or scarring. The impact could be 15,000 times worse if emissions stay high! It's a clear sign that action is needed. How do Whale Sharks navigate our oceans? 🌊 Scientists aren’t exactly sure, but there’s a fascinating theory that it may involve magnetic orientation! 🧭 By tracking the migration patterns of tagged whale sharks, researchers have observed that their routes often follow undersea mountain ridges and fault lines. 🌍 The more we study these magnificent creatures, the more mystical they seem! 💫✨ #WhaleSharks #OceanMysteries #MarineLife #WildlifeConservation #Galapagos #DeepSeaExploration #EcoTourism 📸 @galapagos_whale_shark_project

🐋 We've saved the most exciting for last! 🌊 As we wrap up another extraordinary season of whale shark tagging, we’re thrilled to introduce you to Elise, our final and most remarkable discovery of the year! 🦈 Elise is no ordinary whale shark—her journey is nothing short of incredible. After being tagged during our June expedition, she has amazed scientists by traveling an astounding 5,000 kilometers west into the vast Pacific, setting a record as the farthest-traveled whale shark we've ever tracked. This unprecedented migration is providing our research team with groundbreaking data on the expansive routes these gentle giants traverse across the ocean. With her distinctive features, including a large notch on her dorsal fin and a missing tip on her left pectoral fin, Elise stands out not only for her size but for the vital role she plays in deepening our understanding of whale shark behavior and migration patterns. 🌍 Your continued support makes this research possible. Over 80% of our profits directly fund conservation efforts through the Galapagos Whale Shark Project. And just like this season, where you've helped name these majestic creatures, we invite you to continue following their journeys and contribute to their preservation. Join us in celebrating Elise and her epic voyage—there's so much more to uncover, and together, we’re shaping the future of marine conservation. 🌊 Introducing another magnificent whale shark from this year's expedition: Star! 🦈 Measuring an impressive 11 meters, Star was tagged on June 25, 2024, with Tag ID: 262716. Unlike many others, Star's smooth, flawless body shows no scars or scratches—indicating she may have had fewer encounters with potential threats in her environment. Star was a new sighting during our June 2024 expedition and was quickly named by one of our Citizen Science participants. Tracking Star will provide crucial insights into how often new whale sharks enter the region and their movement patterns around the Galapagos Islands. 🌍 Follow Star’s journey and learn more about her story: https://loom.ly/bUhJnkc Stay tuned for more updates from this year's expedition! #NameAWhaleShark #GalapagosSharkDiving #MarineConservation *Photo from this years field expedition was captured by and feature the team of scientists from the Galapagos Whale Shark Project.

🌊 Today, we introduce another magnificent whale shark tagged this June: Makeba! 🦈 Makeba, measuring an impressive 10 meters, was tagged on June 21, 2024. Notable for her injured dorsal fin, likely caused by an old propeller strike, Makeba's story brings attention to the challenges whale sharks face due to human activities, such as fishing gear and vessel strikes. Her resilience and strength inspire our ongoing conservation efforts. By tracking Makeba, scientists aim to gain insights into how such injuries impact migration and behavior. 🌍 Learn more about Makeba and follow her journey here: https://loom.ly/f-CSlN0 Stay tuned for more updates from this year's expedition! #NameAWhaleShark #GalapagosSharkDiving #MarineConservation *Photo by the team of scientists from the Galapagos Whale Shark Project.
