In 2022, we launched Arbonics with a focus on afforestation—a clear, verifiable carbon removal solution, most in demand by carbon buyers. But I kept envisioning a product that could go further: one that would protect existing forests. The challenge? Carbon markets are already complex, and safeguarding mature forests requires a different level of precision. By 2023, it was clear that building an “Impact Forestry” product would require 5-8x the complexity of afforestation. We needed bulletproof design and rigorous validation. So we started building Impact Forestry only after we completed fundraising last year and could put a dedicated team building that. Ingeborg (previously at WWF) joined us to lead the efforts and it was a team of 10 people working for a year to build that product. It was even more complex than we thought. I have 130 year old pine trees near my cabin in the forests. If Verra project is for 40 years, what will happen to those trees during that period? Turns out - nobody knows. Most of the forestry research is happening around the earlier growth phase, because most of the forests are being cut if they reach maturity. Our answer? We brought together scientists from ecosystem research, forestry, soil science, geoinformatics, and data science to create a solution that integrates insights across these fields. As an example, we accessed data from the Estonian Land Registry, covering 1.7 million parcels, to identify primary tree species across various habitat qualities. That is the attached screenshot - a summary of main species and habitat types. Close to million parcels combined on that picture! Using this comprehensive data and forestry growth models, we could see distinct growth patterns across parcels, allowing us to predict forest development over time. We launched the Impact Forestry pilot in Estonia a month ago and the landowner interested has been crazy. Our tech has already helped more than 100 landowners. So first time ever they will have a data based future estimate and an alternative to clear cutting. To me that is the solution to Nature-based Carbon Markets - full transparency based on technology and data.

Designed to reward landowners for improved forest management, Impact Forestry is the ideal project for climate-conscious companies that want to invest beyond carbon. From preserving biodiversity, increasing carbon storage, and supporting local communities, it benefits both the forest and the people who look after it. We support landowners every step of the way, collaborating on a management plan tailored to their land and only earning when they do. More than 200 landowners have already partnered with us, and with Impact Forestry now live— we are delighted to see our impact grow. As we expand, we remain true to our mission: fair income for landowners, proven credits for companies and more forests for us all. As a leading carbon removal developer of digitally-traceable nature-based credits, there are many ways we maintain our projects to the highest standards. #technology underpins it all. By digitising nature, we better utilise its existing systems, while tracking the entire process. Three years in, and we have launched in 4 countries, signed 200+ landowners, and planted over 4 million trees. We are projected to remove over 600,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide across our existing projects. We do love a Work From a Forest Day, and we’ll love it even more now with these jackets! Thank you to Fjällräven for your nature-friendly approach. We’re pleased to work alongside brands that share our values. Should you spot a flash of green in the woods, that’ll be us, working where we feel right at home 🌲 Pictured: Our CEO Kristjan, along with Chantel and Villem from the tech team

Since our team members do WFF (Work From a Forest) from time to time, I decided to surprise our almighty Arbonics team with some proper forest gear. Fjällräven's nature friendly approach was a good fit and the team is now well protected. 🌦 🌳 Thanks Villem from not allowing anyone to make the logo bigger and Kärt Johanna for setting it up. And of course, Chantel, thanks for the modelling (both on the picture and in the spreadsheets).

Isometric today released a protocol for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) via reforestation for public consultation. This protocol brings Isometric’s scientific rigor and tech-enabled transparency to the reforestation industry. Now, buyers have a registry option that’s fast, easy to work with and incorporates the latest approaches to monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV). High quality, trustworthy credits are needed in as many carbon removal pathways as possible to avoid the worst effects of climate change. Trees are one of the most energy efficient forms of carbon removal and we need more of them to meet our climate goals. This is why reforestation is playing a key role in the CDR market today. The protocol offers three key innovations that solve long-standing issues in forestry based carbon removal: tech-first quantification, dynamic baselines and a new approach to leakage and life cycle assessments. This protocol was created in collaboration between Isometric’s in-house Science Team as well as external consultants from academia. The protocol was reviewed by industry leaders in the reforestation market: project developers such as MOMBAK and Arbonics; technology providers such as Pachama; carbon data platforms such as Renoster and Sylvera; and Isometric's 300-member Science Network. Isometric worked with these reforestation leaders to ensure the protocol reflects the best available science, offers flexibility for the operational variety of suppliers and includes the innovative technology solutions available in digital MRV. Scaling carbon removal—responsibly and fast—is key to combating climate change. This protocol raises the bar for quality and trust in reforestation by embedding Isometric’s innovative, technology-first approach in the core of Isometric’s reforestation credits. Did you know that 51.5% of Estonia is covered by forests? These diverse ecosystems not only define our landscape but also store 151.76 million tonnes of CO2 in their wooden biomass, according to Statistikaamet / Statistics Estonia 🌲 As Estonians, we’re surrounded by an abundance of carbon-storing forests. And we must protect them. However, over the past decade, intense harvesting has affected much of Europe—including Estonia. This is why Impact Forestry was a dream project for our co-founder, Kristjan Lepik, from the very beginning. And at Arbonics, we’re committed to protecting our forests through #innovation. Our approach combines forestry expertise with local knowledge through a robust data approach, developed by top scientists in geo-informatics and forestry. Our #technology: 🌳 Performs stringent eligibility checks (50+ data layers verify each plot for suitability), guaranteeing the long-term success of each project 🌲 Digitally maps, assesses, and monitors every project, ensuring complete transparency 🌱 Works with industry-leading scientific models that predict forest growth, carbon capture and expected credits, providing unbeatable accuracy Learn more about Impact Forestry and our work.
