Digital Cleanup Day is a global initiative raising awareness about digital pollution, encouraging everyone to declutter.
About us
Welcome to the *official* LinkedIn page for Digital Cleanup Day's global activity, brought to you by our Tallinn-based HQ. Digital Cleanup Day is a day dedicated to cleaning up our digital lives, just like we clean up our physical environment on World Cleanup Day. Now into its fifth year, and organised by Let's Do It World, Digital Cleanup Day is aimed at raising awareness about digital pollution, encouraging individuals and companies to declutter and restructure their online presence. In the digital world, just like in the physical world, there is a huge amount of trash. Unnecessary emails, files, apps, and duplicates of photos and videos are all digital waste. For the calculation of digital trash, we use the world average CO2 emission figures of the International Energy Agency, according to which, “4 GB of data stored on servers and other data storage for one year consumes 2 kWh of energy and produces 1 kg of CO2.” 120 zettabytes of data were produced in 2023, which is forecast to reach 147 zettabytes in 2024. 2023 witnessed an increase of 23.71% in the data generated compared to the previous year. Since 2020, 175 different countries and territories have taken part in Digital Cleanup Day. Over 1.2 million people have deleted just over 14.5 million GB of data, preventing the yearly production of around 3,625 tons of CO2. To prevent digital waste becoming the new "single-use plastic" crisis, start with these three, simple, everyday steps: 1. Become aware of the impact of digital waste. 2. Delete all unnecessary digital content. 3. Create data responsibly. Everyone with a digital device can take part in Digital Cleanup Day, simply by identifying and deleting unnecessary data, such as duplicate photos and/or videos, or large data files no longer needed. Carry out an audit of what to get rid of, work out the total amount, then report it on our website so your figures can join those from the rest of the world!

🌎🖐 There are now 5 months to go before World Cleanup Day Official 2024! How are your preparations going? Do you have some events already planned? Is your company, your local government, your school or university taking part? Are you making “connections”? 👫👭👬 ”Connection” is our theme for this year’s campaign and our overall aim is to engage 5% of the world population – that’s about 400 million people – the tipping point needed to generate lasting societal change in behaviour relating to mismanaged waste. We can get there together! 🤝🌎🌱 Speaking of connection, in just two days, on 22 April, we will observe International Earth Day, organised by Earth Day Network. Their theme this year is “Plastics vs. Planet”, highlighting the scale of the plastic pollution crisis. We have been running a series of posts recently, connected directly to that theme and Earth Day’s #PlasticDetox, as well as encouraging people to sign up to Earth Day’s Plastic Treaty. 🤝 Such connection between our organisations highlights the importance and relevance of cooperation to help achieve our mutual aims. We celebrate the connection between Let's Do It World Official and EARTHDAY.ORG as we continue our countdown to World Cleanup Day 2024! 🌎💚 #worldcleanupday #letsdoitworld #WCD2024 #wastefreeworld #connection #earthday

This is great! And indeed the real target is not the total GB deleted, but to reduce the CO2 footprint by preventing the digital waste in the first place. Many thanks to dentsu denmark for reporting in! 🙌

7️⃣🌎💁♂️ Last but not least, here is Tip #7 in our #PlasticDetox Social Media Challenge journey: Prefer sustainable fashion! ❓ Did you know that washing our synthetic clothing accounts for 35% of all microplastics in our waters, making them the largest source of microplastic pollution in the world’s oceans? 😲 🧀 Microplastics infiltrate the food chain and, in a March 2022 study in the Netherlands, microplastics were found in the blood of 80% of people tested – with 50% of those plastics being PET (polyethylene terephthalate) – the very same plastic material found in clothing. 🩸👕 💚✅ So, here is another possibility to take responsibility and harness your customer power – just prefer natural fabrics: organic cotton, linen, or hemp, preferably organic, and reject those pollution-causing materials found in too many clothing items! Here are a few 'did-you-knows' to help influence a change in our purchasing patterns: ❌ Polyester – one of the most commonly used synthetic fabrics, polyester sheds microfibres when washed, contributing to plastic pollution in waterways. ❌ Nylon – another popular synthetic fabric, nylon also sheds microfibres during washing, adding to the microplastic contamination of aquatic environments. ❌ Acrylic – often used in knitwear and fleece fabrics, acrylic is another synthetic material that can release microplastics when laundered. ❌ Spandex (or Lycra/Elastane) – this stretchy fabric, commonly found in activewear and swimwear, is also synthetic, and can shed microfibres during washing. 2️⃣ 💁🌎 The second #PlasticDetox tip: 🙋♀️ Switch to Reusable Alternatives! 👌 Here are 7 simple steps to consider: ✅ Bring your own reusable shopping and produce bags to markets, and avoid using single-use plastic bags. ✅ Bring your own reusable cup when buying beverages like tea, coffee, etc. If you like sipping through straws, get yourself a durable stainless steel, glass, or bamboo one to use, instead of using wasteful plastic ones. ✅ Stop buying water in plastic bottles – invest in a water filter, and/or a water bottle made from glass or metal. Bonus: it’s cheaper in the long run! ✅ Make your own reusable cloth bags from old t-shirts, using basic sewing skills (or no sewing at all). Find simple instructions online! ✅ Revamp your wardrobe and give old clothing a new life by upcycling them into trendy pieces or altering them to fit your style. ✅ Bring a reusable container to a restaurant with you for when you have leftovers. ✅ Share your own tips in the comments below! 👇 EARTHDAY.ORG Let's Do It World Official World Cleanup Day Official #earthday #worldcleanupday #letsdoitworld #planetvsplastics #wastefreeworld
