Chumz.io was among the winners of the L59 Pitch Competition in #Kenya last year. 🎉 The startup has created a behavioural based savings and investment app that enables users to create saving goals and invest toward them via mobile money deposits. The fintech vertical and mobile phone usage are huge in Africa, and on the rise! 🌍 📈 What has the Chumz team been up to? How did winning the competition support their growth?💡Samuel Njuguna from the Chumz team shares the latest steps on their growth. PS. What's your next big leap? "Since last year, we hit 200,000 registered users in Kenya and we are testing our solution to go live in Rwanda this year. We are introducing more gamified saving and investment options, like the Superfan challenge, where users save and invest based on the performance of their favorite football team. For example, if your team wins, the app prompts you to save a set amount. Our next big leap is to hit 1,000,000 clients in Kenya by 2026 and be operational in Uganda, Tanzania and Botswana by then as well." 2️⃣ What did you gain from participating at the L59 Pitch Competition last year? Anything new for you? "It was a good networking platform where we met some of the industry thought leaders and we have engaged with some of them for feedback and in various areas of partnership. We also go to get clients who were part of the audience and from the media coverage of the event." 3️⃣ How was the experience of being in the competition? Any recommendations to those still thinking about applying? "It was a great experience to be trained by experienced pitching coaches, engaging a well seasoned startup community and presenting at an international stage. The exposure also gave us new clients from the media coverage the event got. This guy watched his dad lose 100 acres of bananas to spoilage. So, he invented a spray that keeps fruit fresh for weeks. Meet Jean-Paul Nageri - you can call him JP. At 15, JP's dad moved the family to Uganda to start a farm. Naturally, he got pulled into the farm life and studied Agricultural Science and Entrepreneurship in college. But in 2017, he had a wake-up call. His dad had a deal with a buyer who never showed - and he lost 90% of his banana harvest for the season - about 100 acres. JP was determined to find a solution to the spoilage problem. And he realized two things: - 40% of all food produced in Africa is lost to spoilage - so his dad was one of many affected farmers. - Some fruits - like oranges - outlasted others. And JP wanted to know why. So, in 2018, he started tinkering. JP set up a makeshift lab in his garage where he extracted the compounds that made oranges outlast other fruits. He mixed them up in different amounts and ran experiments - spraying tomatoes and avocados and eyeing them for weeks. And he landed on a solution that extends the shelf life of fresh produce by 2-4 times. He called it “Ka-Fresh” - and incorporated Sio-Valley Technologies to boost food production across Africa. Today, Sio Valley is a VC-funded startup helping millions of farmers and traders in Africa keep their produce. And now, they're taking on the global $750 billion food waste problem. Jean-Paul is an incredible founder. His story is proof that answers to the world’s problems can come from the most unlikely places - like a makeshift lab in Uganda.
