Autumn marks new beginnings! At the recent student thesis fair at the Department of Geography, we had a great time with BSc and MSc students as we combined thesis topics, supervisors, data sets, and methods in the form of a board game. Treats and snacks prepared by Elise Jalonen and Michele Donnini added extra flavour! After discussions with Anto Aasa, Age Poom and Siiri Silm from our lab, the students have now headed to more serious paths and we look forward to exciting research results in the springs to come. In the following Researcher's Night, Ago Tominga and Elise Jalonen guided a map-based board game on crises preparedness. Mobile phone data play a crucial role in defining the amount and location of people in need and respective use cases are being developed in collaboration with Estonian Rescue Board.

A research group that studies mobility and its associations with society and the environment using mobile big data.
About us
By understanding human mobility at a range of spatial and temporal scales, we aim to develop better knowledge of a variety of socio-spatial phenomena occurring within and across our cities, regions, and countries. With open data, methods, tools, and research results, we aim to better understand our society while supporting evidence-based decision-making and smart governance towards a sustainable future. Our research interests include diverse topics related to human mobility such as human presence and spatial mobility, social networks and socio-spatial inequalities in activity space, environmental exposure and urban sustainability, tourism and transnational lifestyles, as well as dynamic populations and crisis management. Since the 2000s, we have been the pioneers of mobile phone data-based research and methodological development for governance and official statistics. In our analyses, we use mobile phone data from mobile network operators and smartphone GPS-level data from an in-house developed smartphone application called MobilityLog. Furthermore, we combine bike share data, mobility surveys, public transit data, environmental geospatial data sets, population register, and census data in our analyses and applications. Our rich data sets are stored in the Infotechnological Mobility Observatory, which is an innovative and comprehensive data bank that supports diverse mobility research in collaboration with our partners. We carry out our mission through cutting-edge research and applied science projects, teaching on all study levels, and via individual supervision of students and early career researchers. Since 2008, we have been organising the biennial Mobile Tartu Conference, which brings together leading scholars, researchers, and professionals to discuss the latest research and applications in human mobility and mobile big data: mobiletartu.ut.ee.

At the ESTGIS annual conference on GIS and cartography in Tartu, Anto Aasa from the Mobility Lab presented ongoing research aimed at defining Estonia’s functional areas as part of the forthcoming national plan “Estonia 2050.” He explored different approaches to defining these areas, discussing their advantages and disadvantages. Work on the project continues!

Elise, we are so proud of having you with us! Wish you all the best for this 4y long academic adventure! 🤗
Starting from this September, I've been working at the University of Tartu as a Junior Research Fellow in Mobility Studies, and now that it's October, I can hardly believe how fast the first month flew by! I'm incredibly excited and fortunate to continue my work with the Mobility Lab, University of Tartu, in the Geography department. My PhD project, "Equitable Mobility Transition in Urban Areas," supervised by Veronika Mooses and Age Poom, focuses on a topic that has long fascinated me. I'm looking forward to expanding my knowledge and collaborating on projects with researchers in the fields of human geography and mobility justice. 📖 While the new academic year brought the comfort of my familiar desk and amazing coworkers, my tasks have evolved from my previous role as a mobility specialist. I'm attending lectures again, participating in international projects, and joining doctoral schools and international courses. Balancing all these new experiences with the more traditional work of writing PhD articles and reading will be a challenge at first, but I'm looking forward to getting used to the new rhythm. 📷 Photo credit for the capture of the Department goes to Martin Haamer, and the photo credit for the last picture where I'm with my friend Kristel goes to Maileen Rohtmets.

Finally meeting F2F our partners in the V2G-QUESTS project, funded by Driving Urban Transitions Partnership/ETAG - Estonian Research Council! Age Poom and Daiga Paršova presented the ongoing work in Tartu to understand societal barriers and needs of applying vehicle-to-grid technology in connection to major renovation of housing estates in Annelinn. The Estonian delegation was amended by Mairit Saar, a representative of our Associated Partner Eesti Energia, who has provided electricity grid data for finding optimal charging stations in the area. The most inspirational talk, followed by a field excursion, was given by Matthijs Kok from the City of Utrecht. They are well advanced in planning and deploying V2G technology in Utrecht to avoid grid congestion and finding business models with car-sharing solutions. As agreed in the meeting, we'll meet with the consortium next time in Tartu! Welcome! 🤗
Extremely happy with the first face-to-face meeting of the V2G-QUESTS project (DUT) that has taken place over two days in the Netherlands (10 months into the project). First day at TU Delft discussing progress on the Work Packages and overall project achievements, and the second day visiting our Dutch case study in Utrecht: the district of Kanaleneiland (with a wonderful dinner in between). It was great to count on the province and the municipality of Utrecht participation and to get more information about the leadership of this city in V2G technology development and adoption. Thank you to all participants: Qiaochu Fan, Shadi Sharif Azadeh, Maxime Van Elsué, Age Poom, Marith Dieker, Gijs van Stekelenburg, Asier Divasson Jaureguibarria, Martin de Jong, Kelvin Walenta, Robert Gaugl, Leonie Reins, Laura Kaschny, Daiga Paršova, Catarina Barreto, Gonçalo Santinha, Roelof Mulder, Matthijs Kok, Mairit Saar and Ard Jonker as well as a few other observers. Over the past month, we had the pleasure of hosting Olena Holubowska, a PhD student from Leuven, in our lab in Tartu. Olena contributed valuable work and energy to our lab; having her here was a great pleasure! As she returns to Leuven, we've shared some photos from her time with us and a short interview about her experience. Thank you, Olena, and safe travels! ✈ 🙌 ❔ Hi Olena, can you please give a short introduction to yourself? Hello! My name is Olena, and I am a PhD student in the Department of Geography at KU Leuven in Belgium. I began my PhD three years ago under the supervision of Ate Poorthuis. Prior to that, I completed both my bachelor's and master's degrees in Denmark. ❔ What is your research topic? My research focuses on daily mobility patterns of residents from various backgrounds and how these patterns relate to urban segregation. I use big data collected from mobile phones to model mobility behavior, and I measure the level of segregation experienced by different groups in various urban spaces beyond residential areas. ❔ What was the aim of your visit? I visited Tartu for one month to connect with the Mobility Lab and the researchers working there, learn from their expertise, and collaborate on a project. The project focuses on intergroup interactions between residents with a migratory background and local residents in activity spaces in Auckland. It is a collaboration with Siiri Silm and Veronika Mooses. ❔ What is your favorite place (or activity) in Tartu? Or what was your favorite moment during your stay in Tartu? That's an easy one! I absolutely fell in love with the Estonian sauna. My favorite moment during my stay was having a BBQ and sauna time with my colleagues in the beautiful Estonian countryside.
