Tartu, a beautiful smart city since 1632, located in the digital fairytale country called Estonia.

About us

In a situation where many cities in the world are arms racing with technology to become “smart”, Tartu has always set its focus towards people. Understanding the needs of our citizens is utmost. Tartu embodies wisdom and therefore boasts an excellent climate for business. We want to become part of the global economy and culture, but at the same time maintain our core values - greenery, compactness and safety. The Tartu Language of Smartness is a way of thinking we need to spread across our community members and also outside of this wonderful city. This gives us the possibility to create the best city to live in. Smart City Tartu lies on six pillars: governance, mobility, economy, environment, people and living. Whether it’s participatory governance or participative budgeting, we have opened the decision processes to our citizens and also act as a testbed for innovative technological solutions around the city. Tartu has a strong and prosperous community with various incubators, research institutions and the startup ecosystem. Companies value our open business environment and scientific entrepreneurship; people our greenery, milieu and living environment. We have always been at the forefront of adapting technology – in 2019, the city introduced a data-based public transportation network along with a new bicycle network with electrical rental bikes.

🚴♀️ Tartu Ranks 4th in Europe for Bike-Sharing Usage! According to a data-driven study by Cycling Industries Europe, Tartu citizens are the fourth most active users of bike-sharing services across Europe! The “Shared Ambition” report provides an overview of the future of the European cycling industry and its impact on the environment and society. The analysis covered 148 European cities and identified the top-performing cycling cities and the reasons behind their success. Tartu has emerged as a shining example, with the number of rides per capita placing us among Europe’s major cycling cities. The report confirms that Tartu is truly a cycling city with significant potential for further developing its cycling culture. Bike-sharing has been one of the city’s greatest success stories, encouraging more people to embrace cycling. Notably, Tartu is the only city with a Nordic climate to rank at the top, despite the challenges of snowy months. While weather conditions can sometimes make cycling less convenient, year-round biking is very much possible! Some key insights from the report: * Tartu ranks 4th, with an average of 20.4 rides per day per 1,000 residents. * In 2023, Tartu’s bike-sharing system recorded a total of 706,000 rides, with 90% of those on electric bikes. * The total distance covered by Tartu residents using shared bikes? Almost 2 million kilometers! The report highlights the importance of having a sufficiently large fleet of rental bikes, affordable pricing, and strong cycling infrastructure to drive bike usage. It’s fantastic to see Tartu leading the way, not just in Estonia but across Europe. Can you guess which three cities lead Europe in bike-sharing usage? 🌍🚲 #CityofTartu #Sustainability #BikeSharing #GreenTransport #SmartCity

Breakthrough in Equine Science: Tartu Leads Estonia’s First Horse Cloning Success In a groundbreaking achievement for equine science, scientists at the Estonian University of Life Sciences have successfully cloned a horse, resulting in the birth of Estonia's first cloned foal this August at Luunja Stud. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as the cloned foal, developed using advanced stem cell technology, is the first of its kind in the country. The foal was implanted into a surrogate mare and is expected to play a key role in the preservation of endangered horse breeds. The cloning process, completed this summer, is especially important for conserving rare breeds such as the Estonian native horse, the Tori horse, and the Estonian draft horse. With this achievement, Estonia joins a select group of countries capable of horse cloning, offering hope for endangered breeds and enhancing elite breeding opportunities. In addition to the cloned foal, another major success was the birth of Estonia's first test-tube foal, Endex, in late August. Endex was created in a lab and implanted into a surrogate mare over a year ago. His biological parents are top-level sport horses, while his surrogate mother, Miss Dior, is caring for him at Luunja Stud. Both of these projects reflect the cutting-edge reproductive technologies being developed in Estonia. Luunja Stud, in collaboration with the Estonian University of Life Sciences, is set to open a new biotech center, offering cloning and embryo technologies to breeders across Europe. These technologies not only help preserve endangered breeds but also enable breeders to clone elite horses, reduce risks in breeding, and ensure the best genetic combinations for future generations. #CityofTartu #Innovation #Biotechnology 📸 Illustrative photo by Mana Kaasik
