⛑️ Dockworkers on the U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast went on strike on Tuesday morning, marking the first significant work stoppage in almost 50 years. The strike has halted over half of ocean shipments following failed negotiations over a new labor contract concerning wage disputes. Notably, the strike is expected to cost the economy $5 billion daily, impacting shipments ranging from food products to automobiles and contributing to inflation. The strike affects numerous ports from Maine to Texas. 🚢 Dockworkers' Union accused container shipping companies of exploiting customers by charging $30,000 per container, even though they were charging only $6,000 a few weeks ago. 🚨On the evening of September 21, an incident occurred at Nansha Port in southern China, resulting in the fall of three containers from the Vladivostok, a vessel belonging to FESCO, which was docked at the port during loading and unloading operations. The incident happened after a crash with the De Xin Shang Hai, a Jiangxi Dexin Shipping vessel, that caused the containers to fall into the water. Following the incident, the Guangzhou Maritime Search and Rescue Center intervened, sending two ships and two boats to retrieve the containers. The teams managed to secure the fallen containers alongside the Vladivostok. 🚢The MSC company has adjusted its European service network, reducing its services between the Western Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The changes include removing Marseilles Port (France) and Barcelona Port (Spain) from the port schedule and adding Egypt’s Alexandria port. The severe flooding in Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic has negatively impacted the transport network’s local infrastructure and container facilities. Hapag-Lloyd has announced that the flooding has affected its container depots, which may lead to delays in the affected regions. Hapag-Lloyd has indicated that the company will continue to accept bookings for the coming weeks. They request customers to understand the situation and accept delays in the affected areas, as they strive to restore operations as quickly as possible. Kuehne + Nagel has reported that the Ostrava terminal in the Czech Republic will be fully accessible by rail by the 20th of September once again after being closed due to flooding.
