To ensure equal contribution in a group project when a classmate is slacking off, it's important to address the issue constructively. Communicate Openly: Have a candid discussion with the classmate, expressing concerns respectfully and clarifying the importance of everyone's role in the project. Assign Clear Roles and Deadlines: Divide tasks according to each member's strengths and set specific deadlines. This promotes accountability and ensures that everyone understands their responsibilities. Involve the Instructor if Necessary: If the issue persists, seek guidance from the instructor. This demonstrates your commitment to fairness and ensures that the group's efforts are properly recognized.

One thing I found helpful is ensuring that my classmates understand their role in the project and hold them accountable and responsible for their part. Admittedly I found myself in a similar situation due to multiple projects and obligations. To solve this involved a reassessment of my schedule, and asking for help when required. Effective communication is key in order to be on the same page and come to an amicable resolution.

As a lecturer, I ensure that each group selects a team leader who is responsible for holding meetings with group members and delegating tasks based on the project. I ensure that each group understands that grades do not have to be identical and are determined by attendance to group meetings and the quality of the contribution to the final product. At times, I allow for an anonymous peer review to determine the final grade.

To ensure equal contribution in a group project, try these steps: Set Clear Roles: Define specific roles and tasks for each group member. Communicate Directly: Address the issue calmly with your classmate and express the need for balanced effort. Track Progress: Use shared documents or tools to monitor each member's contributions. Provide Support: Offer help or resources if they’re struggling with their tasks. Involve the Instructor: If the issue persists, inform the instructor for further guidance.

When I assigned group projects, I always gave individual grades by asking students to write an anonymous notecard with every group member's contribution. 9/10 times, every group member's card was identical, but whenever there was a discrepancy with one member stating they did more than everyone else did, it was pretty obvious in the final product and I could assess the projects individually in a way that was fair.
