A coach’s job is not really to empower a client while they’re working together; it is to help the client discover their empowered self so that they don’t lose it after they stop working with the coach.

To foster independence, I initially allow clients to rely on my guidance during the first few sessions. Gradually, I introduce scenarios where they can exercise independent decision-making while I provide support. By offering probing questions and choices, I help them build confidence in their abilities. Throughout this process, I reinforce the boundaries of the coaching relationship, ensuring they understand the transition from dependence to self-reliance.

Affirm and assign. "I appreciate your trust in me. Let's hit a reset with an assignment that helps you trust yourself." First, we would retrace personal decisions with positive outcomes. Second, provide an assignment that relies on their own research or intuitive insight. Third, they take action around the second step and report the results.

Helping a client gain independence is a crucial aspect of effective coaching. Here are some of my strategies to achieve this: Empowerment Through Education: I provide my client with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions. This could include teaching them coping strategies, problem-solving skills, and self-care techniques. Encouraging Self-Reflection: I encourage my clients to reflect on their experiences and feelings. This can help them gain insights into their behaviors and motivations, fostering self-awareness and independence. Gradual Reduction of Support: I gradually reduce the level of support I provide to as my client becomes more confident and capable. This can help them feel more independent and self-reliant.

Es importante que en cada sesión se genere anclaje de los aprendizajes, a través de preguntas como ¿de que te has dado cuenta? ¿Qué te llevas de esta sesión?, así como también los recursos que el cliente ha generado y que estarán ahí para ser utilizados cuando él lo requiera, haciéndole preguntas como ¿ si en el futuro te encuentras nuevamente en esta situación, que va a ser posible para ti?
