📢 The selection of the Abarca Prize winner 2024 has been decided by an international jury that represents different medical disciplines. The jury of the IV Edition is made up of external and independent members appointed by Fundación de Investigación HM Hospitales (FiHM), taking into account both their experience of accredited academic and professional prestige, as well as their international relevance for their contribution to science. In this actual edition, the jury of Abarca Prize was chaired by Professor Silvia Giuliana Priori, cardiologist and researcher at the Department of Molecular Medicine of the University of Pavia, as well as at the ICS Maugeri Hospital, and included among its members the winners of the two previous editions of the award, Professors Douglas Melton and Philippe J. Sansonetti. The Abarca Prize has been awarded to scientists of recognized prestige in medical and scientific research. 👉 The I Edition award was awarded to Professor Jean-Laurent Casanova for his revolutionary study of human infections and the genetic variations that affect a person's ability to fight infections, which represents the so-called "infection enigma". 👉 Professor Philippe Sansonetti, with a brilliant professional career of more than 40 years, was chosen winner of the II Edition for his research focused on various aspects of the pathogenesis of the Shigella bacteria, a diarrheal disease responsible for more than 80 million cases and 700,000 deaths a year worldwide. 👉 Professor Douglas A. Melton was the winner of the III Edition for his work studying the possibilities of stem cells for the creation of therapies for the treatment of diseases such as type 1 diabetes. He has achieved that patients who have received stem cells Pancreatic islets transplanted along with immunosuppressive drugs have been “cured” for several months of type 1 diabetes. 🔝 The jury of Abarca Prize in its IV Edition has awarded Dr. Carl June for his pioneering development of a revolutionary strategy to treat blood cancers, based on CAR-T (Chimeric Antigen Receptor), a cell therapy. It is an example of what’s popularly known as immunotherapy treatment because it uses the body’s own immune system to fight cancer. In addition to this scientific finding of global relevance, his research continues to translate into other important clinical areas, as scientists are now working to apply this treatment to other solid neoplasms, autoimmune pathologies (such as lupus) and many other non-oncological diseases. Vague Professor of Immunotherapy at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, and director of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy at this important institution, is the winner of the IV Edition of «ABARCA PRIZE», the Doctor Juan Abarca Cidon International Prize for Medical Sciences, for his pioneering research and development of a revolutionary strategy to treat blood cancers, based on cellular engineering. It is known as CAR-T (Chimeric Antigen Receptor) cell therapy and is an example of what is popularly known as immunotherapy treatment because it uses the body's own immune system to fight cancer.
