AD4GD

We're extremely excited to announce (and open source) SpeciesNet today, our AI model for species recognition in camera trap images, capable of recognising more than 2000 animals species around the world. To our knowledge this is currently the largest publicly available model out there, and ever since 2019, increasingly more complex versions of SpeciesNet have been serving the conservation community through the Wildlife Insights platform (https://lnkd.in/gngi6saF). We hope that by offering this powerful tool freely, we will enable even more researchers, conservationists and individual practitioners to scale up their global efforts to protect our fragile Earth and its biodiversity. Try it from the comfort of your own computer, in your office or in the field, without needing to upload your images to the cloud, and let us know what you think. Personally, this has been the most impactful project I've worked on in my career, and despite the uncertainty of the arrangement and the bureaucratic hurdles we had to fight every single year (thanks Tanya Birch & Karin Tuxen-Bettman!), the risks I took to be able to contribute to something meaningful to me paid off in the end. But these opportunities are extremely rare, and even more so for highly skilled engineers, in a time when we desperately need more of them in a whole range of disciplines if we're serious about solving any planetary crisis. As I'm looking for my next tribe, I'm rooting for more initiatives like this to reach the maturity to be released in the public space.

Funded under the EU #HorizonEurope programme, these projects contribute to the European #Green Deal and data strategy by enabling more efficient, transparent, and collaborative use of data. It is always hard to dive into the technical details even if the audience has a lot of knowledge about spatial data... Nevertheless, our biodiversity pilot relates social sciences as well. Sharing a late poster from BIOSPACE25 conference hosted by European Space Agency - ESA, co-authored with Ivette Serral and CREAF! Spatio-temporal biodiversity data are should be represented as data-cubes, including the following dimensions: - latitude and longitude (as usual) 🌍 - time (we use 5-year steps, but it can be even monthly data!) 🕘 - indicator (eg, multiple habitat connectivity indices) 🦔 - parameters of indicators (migration distance, probability, etc.) 🧮 ... (your suggestions are welcome) The outputs can be stored and hosted on Open Data Cube (opendatacube.org) or FAIRiCUBE, accessed then as a NetCDF files. Ich freue mich sehr, dass wir Teil der 5. Wasser & Umwelt-Exkursion der HTWG Hochschule Konstanz – Technik, Wirtschaft und Gestaltung, Fakultät Bauingenieurwesen sein durften! 🌊 Vom 22.09. bis 27.09.2024 hatten die teilnehmenden Studierenden die Möglichkeit, spannende Einblicke in verschiedene Projekte und Anlagen in Berlin und Brandenburg zu gewinnen. Ein Highlight für uns war ihr Besuch bei uns am @Kompetenzzentrum Wasser Berlin, wo wir die Gelegenheit hatten, unsere Arbeit in Projekten wie PROMISCES (#Kreislaufwirtschaft), AD4GD (#Kleingewässer) und SEMAplus (#Kanalalterungsprognosen) vorzustellen. Das Exkursionsvideo dazu: https://lnkd.in/dM65dDxt Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt lag auf Klimaanpassung, mit Antworten auf Herausforderungen wie Starkregen und Dürren. Unter dem Stichwort #Schwammstadt wurden Ergebnisse aus Projekten wie KURAS und netWORKS4 zur #Regenwasserbewirtschaftung sowie laufende Projekte wie AMAREX und Smart Water präsentiert, die maßgeschneiderte Tools und Modelle für eine Anpassung an den Klimawandel in urbanen Räumen entwickeln. 🌍 Der Austausch mit den angehenden Bau- und Umweltingenieuren war sehr bereichernd. Es ist immer inspirierend zu sehen, wie engagiert die nächste Generation die Wasser- und Umweltbranche erkundet. 💧 Ein großes Dankeschön an die Organisatoren Prof. Dr. Sören Knoll, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Dach, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jian-hua Meng und Gerhild Völker-Meng) und die Studierenden für ihren Besuch – wir freuen uns auf weitere Gelegenheiten, Wissen und Ideen zu teilen! 🚀
