Learning the Trade: From Apprentice to Master 🔧In our previous issue, we explored the rich history of shipwright craftsmanship across the centuries. Today, we delve into how this prestigious trade has been passed down through generations. 🛠️✨ Shipbuilding has traditionally been an artisanal craft, with knowledge often shared from father to son or through the master-apprentice relationship that began in the Middle Ages and continued into the Modern Age. 🌱 Apprenticeship typically started with fundamental tasks, including: Polishing wood: Learning the importance of surface finishing. 🪵 Holding wood during sawing: Gaining an understanding of the sawing process. ⚙️ Nailing and sharpening tools: Developing tool maintenance skills. 🔩 Spinning tow: Familiarizing with material preparation. 🎣 Cleaning the shipyard: Instilling a sense of responsibility and teamwork. 🧹 These essential duties laid the groundwork for apprentices, allowing them to become familiar with tools and techniques before practicing independently. 🎓 From Apprentice to Shipwright After a period of learning and hands-on experience, apprentices would advance to the role of an official shipwright, earning a salary and gaining recognition for their skills. The final milestone was achieving the status of master, a role that required both expertise and leadership. 🌍 Reviving Tradition with AHOD360 The AHOD360 project recognizes the time-honored tradition of passing shipwright skills through generations, from master to apprentice. With immersive 360° tours, we revive this tradition by offering interactive learning experiences, helping trainees gain hands-on exposure to this craft. 👉 Stay Updated! Welcome aboard '#Maritime Glossary'! ⚓️ In this new column, we dive into the fascinating nautical #vocabulary. Let's kick things off with the term #Fore,' a crucial element in maritime language.🚢 🛳️ 'Fore' is all about the bow of a vessel, signifying the front part of the ship. The term 'fore' can be used alone or in combination with other words to indicate specific positions or objects located at the front of a ship. For example, 'foredeck' refers to the area at the front of a ship's deck, while 'foremast' denotes the forward flagpole on vessels with more than one mast. #ErasmusPlus #Shipbuilding #shipwright #AHOD360 #VocationalEducation

Did you know? UNESCO has officially recognized Nordic clinker boat traditions as intangible heritage of humanity. Сlinker #boatconstruction is a traditional method of building wooden boats that has been practiced for thousands of years, particularly in the Nordic regions. 🚢🎉 In clinker construction, the boat's hull is formed by overlapping wooden planks along its length. These planks are usually thin and flexible, allowing them to bend to the shape of the hull. We also talk about the differences between clinker and carvel constructions, and compare then to modern boatbuilding techniques in our Introductory online course Boatbuilding: 🏳️ https://lnkd.in/d5J3k3F5 #ErasmusPlus #Shipbuilding #MultilingualCommunication #Innovation #AHOD360 #VocationalEducation #languagebarrierbreaker
