This week's return of energy spot prices to more typical levels reflects a stabilisation after recent volatility, aligning more closely with prices observed earlier in the year. Welcome to this week’s issue of “Renewables in Numbers”, our weekly summary of the key indicators of the Spanish renewable energy sector. Our newsletter includes key figures related to installed capacity, electricity generation, short and long-term power prices, and an updated review of the permitting and authorisations granted per region to new renewable energy projects. The World Energy Outlook 2024, published by the International Energy Agency yesterday, marks a critical turning point for the global energy sector. The report highlights that renewable energy is expected to account for over 90% of new electricity generation capacity by 2030, with solar leading the way. Solar energy is projected to become the most cost-effective power source in many regions, driving its rapid deployment worldwide. Wind energy, both onshore and offshore, also plays a crucial role in this transition. Governments and private sectors alike are rapidly increasing their investment in wind projects as part of broader efforts to decarbonise electricity grids and meet climate targets. The report emphasises that total energy investment must rise to $4.5 trillion annually by 2030 to achieve net-zero emissions goals, with a significant portion directed toward renewables, electrification, and energy efficiency. This surge in capital will reshape the global energy landscape and accelerate the shift toward a clean energy future. Spain continues to be at the forefront of the energy transition, particularly in solar energy development. The country has emerged as a leader in solar generation, supported by favorable policies and a strong investment pipeline, solidifying its position in the renewable energy landscape. Last week, our Managing Partner, Miguel Solana, participated in a panel at the SuperReturn Global Infrastructure event in London, where industry leaders explored “LP/GP Views on Investing in Renewables.” The discussion focused on the evolving landscape of renewable energy investments in both equity and debt markets, highlighting emerging opportunities across Europe and the U.S. Key takeaways from the event included: - The outlook for renewable energy investments remains highly favorable, with solar PV, wind, and BESS positioned as critical assets driving the global energy transition; - Institutional investors on both sides of the Atlantic are increasingly committed to renewable energy investments, driven by ESG mandates and geopolitical shifts; investors of all types are actively exploring new strategies in this space; - As feed-in tariffs phase out and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) remain limited to larger portfolios or operators, there is a growing case for investments exposed to merchant risk, potentially at different target returns; while some investors remain cautious, others are adopting new strategies to manage market risk; - Mid-market renewable energy fund managers are gaining momentum as smaller investment tickets create fresh opportunities for managers to enter the space; - Infrastructure debt is becoming a particularly attractive asset class, buoyed by rising interest rates and a reduced number of active project finance banks, which further supports the financing of renewable energy projects. Spain has updated its National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) for 2023-2030, setting ambitious targets for renewable energy, greenhouse gas reduction, and economic growth. The new plan includes: - 76 GW of solar PV (19 GW for self-consumption) - 62 GW of wind energy (3 GW offshore) - 22,5 GW of energy storage. By 2030, these efforts aim to reduce emissions by 32% compared to 1990 and boost GDP by 3%, or €44 billion. The €308 billion investment plan allocates 37% to renewables, storage, green hydrogen, and biogas, and 28% to electrification, potentially creating up to 560.000 jobs. Energy independence is projected to reach 50%, saving €87 billion in fossil fuel imports from 2021 to 2030. Alter5 estimates that the renewable sector will need: - €80 billion in debt - €35 billion in equity financing Specifically, solar PV will require: - €22 billion in debt - €12 billion in equity Wind energy will require: - €46 billion in debt - €15 billion in equity Battery storage will require: - €11 billion in debt - €7 billion in equity The plan’s success depends on streamlined project authorisations and a grid capable of integrating new assets. The attached graph highlights the increased targets for solar, wind, and storage in the updated PNIEC.
