𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪 - 𝗝𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗵𝘂𝗵 A few weeks ago, we reached for the stars with the successful launch of the Ariane 6 rocket, a project in which we were fortunate to play a key role, contributing to a new era of space exploration and technological advancement. Before the launch, Jens Hornschuh, project engineer and deputy head of the structural and component testing department at our Dresden (Germany) facilities, conducted a telephone interview with MDR. In the interview, he discussed his feelings about achieving such a significant milestone and the challenges faced in bringing it to fruition. "You can now see the result of a decade of work by hundreds and thousands of engineers," Hornschuh noted. Having worked with the company for the past 18 years, his role was focused on testing various structural parts of the rocket to ensure their safety. "We tested the engine frame for the upper stage engine and also conducted a very, very interesting test on the upper hydrogen tank. We pushed it to its limits and it exploded quite deliberately," Hornschuh explained. One major challenge they faced was the Covid pandemic in 2020. "That was an additional difficulty right in the middle of the development phase, which had a global impact on supply chains and caused staff shortages," Hornschuh detailed. He also noted that working with state institutions added complexity to the process. "Ariane Group and the other participants are not private companies, and there is a tendency to compare us to SpaceX, which has completely different capacities, funds, and reaction times." Hornschuh emphasized the importance of continuing to develop and test rocket technology, given our dependence on satellites. "Who can find their holiday destination without GPS? Europe needs independent access to space to launch its own satellites, have its own GPS, and obtain its own weather data. That's the main point."
