🚨Exciting news! FSA gets funding for cultivated meat sandbox! The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has just announced that they have secured funding to launch a cell-cultivated product (CCP) regulatory sandbox which will support support innovation through safety. The sandbox will be launched in February 2025. Through the 2-year CCP sandbox programme, the FSA and Food Standards Scotland will work closely with businesses to: 🔍 Identify common safety hazards and evidence to mitigate risks. 📜 Clarify regulatory paths within existing frameworks. 🚀 Test a new pre-application support service to streamline the risk assessment process. 🌍 Establish international and cross-government forums to address shared regulatory questions. #FoodInnovation #Regulations #cultivatedmeat #FoodSafety #Futureoffood https://lnkd.in/ds5S9PSc

🚨 New Article 4 Novel Food Consultation for Fermented oats! An Article 4 novel food consultation was submitted to the Swedish 🇸🇪competent authority regarding the use of two products derived from fermented oats; a drink and a powder. The drink is based on oat flour fermented with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (Lactobacillus plantarum). The live bacteria remain in the final product. The fermented oat powder is produced by dehydration of oat flour fermented with the same bacteria as the drink, which are inactivated during the spray drying process. The powder may be dissolved in water to a drink, or added as an ingredient to foods such as yoghurt or cereal. 📊 Highlights: ➡ The ingredients of these products have been widely consumed in the EU before 15 May 1997. ➡ Oat kernels have been consumed as part of a normal diet and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum has been used as in fermentation culture.  ➡ A similar oat drink fermented with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum has been on the Swedish and Finnish markets prior to 1997. ➡ Fermentation and spray drying are traditional processes used in food production. ➡ Spray drying and inactivation of the bacteria did not adversely effect the final ingredient. ✅ Conclusion: Not novel 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dniBJdaY #novelfood #foodregulations #futureoffood

🚨 FSA Consultation on Regulated Products Authorisation Reform: summary of responses The Food Standards Agency (FSA) recently published a summary of stakeholder responses on proposed reforms to the regulated products authorisation process. In total, 123 responses were received from food businesses, trade associations, individual consumers, NGOs and enforcement bodies. Key proposals for reform included: ➡ Removing the renewal requirement for certain products, allowing more efficient use of resources and reducing administrative burden. The process of renewing approvals is long and costly. Renewals currently comprise about one in five (22%) of total regulated product applications. ➡Removing the requirement for statutory instruments (SIs) / Scottish statutory instruments (SSIs) to bring regulated product authorisations into effect, following a ministerial decision with the aim of removing bureaucracy and reducing the time taken for authorisations, with no impact on food and feed safety. 📊 Highlights The majority of respondents (87, 71%) ‘agreed’ or ‘strongly agreed’ with the proposal to remove the renewal requirement. The main reason given for disagreeing with the proposal was that renewals are necessary to ensure food safety. An Article 4 novel food consultation was submitted to the Polish 🇵🇱 competent authority regarding the use of Tributyrin for use in food . 📊 Highlights: ➡ Tributyrin is a triglyceride obtained by formal acylation of the three hydroxy groups of glycerol by butyric acid. It is a triglyceride and a butyrate ester. ➡ The Applicant did not present data confirming consumption to a significant degree of this product as food before 15 May 1997 in the European Union ➡ Tributyrin falls under the novel food category Art. 3(2)(a)(i) of the regulation (EU) 2015/2283 - food with a new or intentionally modified molecular structure, where that structure was not used as, or in, a food within the Union before 15 May 1997. ❌ Conclusion: Novel food (unless it is used as a flavouring then it would fall under that regulatory pathway) 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dabrkKae #novelfood #foodregulations

🔔 Publication of the GB Register of Feed Materials! The UK feed chain task force, which is a coalition of UK animal feed industry trade associations has introduced the GB Register of Feed Materials.
