Technology is essential. Every bank relies on two primary components to carry out its operations: the core banking system, where transactions happen or cash deposits are, and the retail banking platform, including apps or websites that customers use. The core banking is the engine of the car, while the retail banking platform is the chassis. In recent years, Santander has made substantial investments in developing its own award-winning proprietary technology. Gravity is our core banking system and ODS is our retail banking platform. From a technological standpoint, they both are each setting new standards for the financial services industry. Integrating these technologies in the U.S.—and eventually in other markets—will be transformative for Santander and its customers. Daniel C. and Ovidio Cordero provide further insights into the disruptions brought by these two technologies in our latest podcast. Today, global leaders gathered for the 2024 Santander International Banking Conference to discuss “Growth in a Disrupted World.” The agenda provided a global perspective on today’s economic, regulatory and technological challenges, with discussions led by experts in finance, policy, and industry. The day opened with Santander’s Group Executive Chair, Ana Botín, and European Parliament President, Roberta Metsola, exploring Europe’s competitiveness amid economic shifts, followed by insights on European growth priorities from EIB President, Nadia Calviño. Later, General David H. Petraeus, US Army (Ret.), interviewed by Alexandra de Hoop Scheffer, PhD, provided an expert analysis of geopolitical stability in the Middle East, while Agustín Carstens and Santander CEO, Héctor Grisi Checa, examined how the future of finance must be built on collaboration and shared innovations like AI and blockchain. Insights from Bank of Spain Governor, José Luis Escrivá, addressed integrating growth and competitiveness, with additional discussions from Enrico Letta and Mairead McGuinness on investing in Europe’s future, and Klaas Knot on maintaining financial stability. A dedicated session on Latin America covered regional growth and economic potential, followed by talks on AI’s impact on financial services, featuring perspectives from Uljan Sharka of iGenius and Cecilia Bonefeld-Dahl of DigitalEurope. In the afternoon, former NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, joined virtually to discuss global security challenges, followed by an interview with Jim Messina on the implications of the upcoming U.S. elections. Today, I had the pleasure of speaking with Agustín Carstens, the General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements – BIS, at #SantanderIBC, our annual conference that has gathered experts since 2008. We discussed some of the BIS’s ongoing efforts to leverage technologies to build a financial system that is user-centric and empowers individuals and businesses. Agustín particularly emphasized the adoption of tokenized financial assets as a way to ease many of the existing bottlenecks and fundamentally reshape financial transactions as we know them, especially in the area of cross-border payments, which often suffer from inefficiencies and high costs. At Santander, we share this vision and are collaborating closely on projects like Agorá, which explores the potential of programmability in wholesale central bank money and commercial bank deposits through smart contracts and tokenization. We are excited to partner with the BIS and other institutions to shape a financial system that is more resilient, inclusive, and technologically advanced. Looking ahead, the future of finance will be built on collaboration and shared innovation. It was a great conversation, thanks Agustín for your invaluable insights.
