I had a fantastic time at the Petcare Innovation Summit Europe in Berlin earlier this week. The blend of insightful content, new faces, a plethora of innovative pet tech startups, and a significant presence of investors made it exceptional.
What stood out to me was the harmonious want and need for collaboration across the industry. From startups to SMEs to big corporations, everyone seemed to embrace the belief that we are stronger together. A big thank you to Poppy Howard-Wall, Rebecca Baldwin, and Harrison Sharp for your outstanding work.
It was a privilege to co-panel with the incredible pet tech entrepreneurs Tania Moser Moser (CEO of Pets Deli), Alban de Préville (CEO of Dalma.), and Victor Mortreu (CEO of Just Russel), with moderation by Valerie Bertele (CEO/GP of Yellow Rocks!). We had an engaging discussion on how Data, AI, and Tech can amplify our metrics and those of other pet tech companies.
I also thoroughly enjoyed moderating a panel on innovations in at-home and in-clinic diagnostics with the phenomenal Talía Bonmatí (CEO of Dinbeat) and Dr. James Barr (CMO at Antech Diagnostics).
Thanks to everyone who participated in the AI roundtable. I hope you all found it as valuable as I did.
My Key Takeaways from the Conference:
- AI, Data, and continued Digitalisation: These are the future of pet tech and the pet industry at large. We need to leverage them meaningfully to improve core metrics. We are about 10 years behind human healthcare in these areas.
- Gen Z Pet Owners: We must create digital health solutions for Gen Z pet owners, who prefer convenient, home-based solutions and are highly data-driven.
- Investment Trends: Pet food continues to draw significant attention from investors, but there is a growing interest in various pet health products. Larger investments still tend to favor the food category.
- Pet Care Ecosystem: Who will create the first fully functional, all-in-one pet care ecosystem? Will it be a startup, an incumbent, or a collective of companies? The opportunity is still wide open.
- Feline Market: This market is underserved and full of potential, as many companies still focus predominantly on canines.
- Data Fragmentation: There is a need for an OpenAI equivalent for the pet industry, as data is fragmented and scarce online.
It was wonderful to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. Looking forward to seeing you all in LA, if not sooner.
Don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to collaborate.
