For the very first time, industry leaders and biotech startups have come together to form the AB4S Advanced Biotech for Sustainability Coalition — a cross-sector collaboration dedicated to accelerating the impact and potential of advanced biotechnology. Today, we are publishing our first report, "Harnessing the Economic and Environmental Benefits of Advanced Biotechnology“. This report is a first-of-its-kind publication collaboratively co-authored by Arsenale Bioyards, Basecamp Research, Cradle, Darwin International, EIT Food, Evonik, The Good Food Institute Europe, Invert, Lallemand, L'Oréal, and ShakeUp Factory, with knowledge and analytical support from McKinsey & Company. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: • Advanced biotech could 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝟱%—equal to three times global aviation emissions • The sector holds a $𝟭 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, comparable to Switzerland’s GDP • Scaling bio-based solutions could 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮 • 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝘀𝗲 equivalent to six times the Nile’s annual flow To realise this potential, the coalition calls for greater collaboration, investment, and a shift toward large-scale deployment of biotech solutions. Members of the AB4S coalition will present the report’s findings at BIOKET Bioeconomy Key Enabling Technologies platform 2025 in Brussels today, where we will discuss how industry and policymakers can work together to overcome key barriers to scale. Regenerative practices can help fix our unsustainable food system, BUT this requires collaboration, funding, and action. 🌍🌱 We spoke with leading experts about how to accelerate finance for #RegenerativeAgriculture and ensure a future-fit food system for all. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱: 🌱 Farmers must be part of financial innovations to ensure funding effectively reaches their pockets. 🌿 Funding solutions must be inclusive, supporting smallholder farmers, Indigenous peoples, and women, who are all on the “food frontline”. 🍃 More early off-takers must step up, recognising that the status quo in farming is riskier than regenerative practices. Watch the full video featuring Jessica Smith, Mark Gough, Simon Duchatelet, Tanja Havemann and Katherine Foster who share their expertise on scaling finance for regenerative agriculture. 💡 Have more ideas to add? Share your thoughts in the comment section. 👇 These insights were captured after our workshop with Clarmondial AG, Foodvalley and the World Economic Forum Food Innovation Hub Europe at Building Bridges 2024. Does soil health explain the decline in food nutrient density? What if all our food was grown using #RegenerativeAgriculture? 🍎🌍 Over time, synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, commercial seeds, and genetically modified crops have become the norm in farming. 🚜 But alongside these methods, studies show a worrying trend: from 1950 to 2002, food nutrient density fell by up to 38%. 📉🥦 We’re not just consuming fewer nutrients than our grandparents – we’re also seeing a rapid rise in public health crises linked to what we eat (FAO). It’s clear that something needs to change. 💡 So, how can we improve farming practices to protect soil health and, in turn, the quality of our food? Learn more from the article in the comments 🔗👇 #SoilHealth #FutureOfFood #ImprovingFoodTogether #SustainableFarming

Food has always been a universal language of LOVE. ❤️️ But if food brings us together, shouldn’t we also care for it in return? In the EU alone, over 59 million tonnes of food waste (132 kg per person) are generated every year (Eurostat, 2024), with an estimated market value of €132 billion. The opportunity to reduce waste, cut emissions, and build a more sustainable food system has never been clearer. We need a system that values food at every stage—one that supports regenerative agriculture, unlocks new markets for surplus food, and empowers all stakeholders to create a truly circular food economy. ♻️ Innovation in food production, storage, and distribution is key to ensuring that nutritious food reaches people, rather than being wasted. Startups like Get Wasted are making this happen. As an online marketplace for food surpluses, it connects farmers, processors, schools, and communities to give surplus food a second life—turning waste into opportunity and improving access to nutritious food. One fact is clear: reducing food waste is an act of love—not only for the food we eat but also for the planet we share. 💚🌍 💡 In your opinion, what food waste reduction practices should be scaled to create a real impact? Who do you trust when it comes to your food? And what do you wish you could change about it? 🤔 We’re excited to launch the latest EIT Food #ConsumerObservatory Trust Report—an annual deep dive into consumer trust and expectations in the European food system. This year’s findings reveal that farmers remain the most trusted food actors, valued for their integrity, transparency, and sustainability. Meanwhile, trust in retailers, manufacturers, and regulators is shaped by factors like legacy, reputation, and high standards—but there’s still work to be done. 👩🌾 At the same time, consumer priorities are shifting. Over half (51%) of Europeans want to prioritise health in their diets, but fewer focus on affordability (12%) or sustainability (9%). Notably, the number of consumers factoring sustainability into their food choices has dropped from 51% in 2023 to just 46% this year. 🥗 So how do we bridge the gap between what consumers want and what the food system delivers? How can we ensure trust, accessibility, and sustainability go hand in hand? 💡 Understanding these insights is key to building a food system that earns confidence and meets consumer needs. Swipe through the carousel for key findings and download the full report here 👉 https://dub.sh/jVLeOjB #ConsumerTrust #FoodSystem #SustainableFood #FoodInnovation #ImprovingFoodTogether

Did you know that pulses nourish both the soil and people? 🫘🌱💪 As demand for protein-rich, sustainable food solutions grows, pulses offer a unique opportunity for the agrifood industry to drive innovation and meet evolving consumer preferences. 🌍 These nutrient-packed seeds—rich in protein, iron, and zinc—are key to tackling global challenges like poverty, malnutrition, and food insecurity. Startups like The Good Pulse Company are unlocking the potential of pulses to create innovative, sustainable ingredients for the food industry. Their work in plant-based cheese development showcases how pulses can deliver taste, nutrition, and functionality while reducing environmental impact. 🧀 Beyond nutrition, pulses play a critical role in sustainable agriculture. As natural nitrogen fixers, they improve soil health, reduce reliance on fertilisers, and support climate-resilient farming practices. 🌾 Healthy soils are the foundation of food security—providing essential minerals to combat malnutrition, anaemia, and growth stunting. 🌎 💡 How can we scale the adoption of pulses to improve health and sustainability? Share your thoughts in the comments! 💬👇 #WorldPulsesDay #LovePulses #FoodInnovation #SustainableFarming #ImprovingFoodTogether
