Trump’s victory in the US presidential election yesterday may start impacting the ocean freight market even before his January inauguration. Here are the key insights from this week’s Freightos Weekly Update: The announcement of new tariffs in 2018 caused an increase in ocean volumes and rates to double ahead of their 2019 roll out. The expectation of even sharper tariff increases after Trump takes office could push some importers to already start frontloading now. Transpacific ocean rates of about $5,200/FEU are well below peak season highs, but are still thousands above normal due to the continued Red Sea crisis, and possibly also to some frontloading ahead of another ILA strike possible in January. Port workers in Prince Rupert and Vancouver have been locked out since the start of the week in response to their strike announcement. Several vessels are currently stuck, with others scheduled to arrive soon. Meanwhile, a union strike in Montreal is impacting 40% of the port’s capacity as this ongoing dispute escalates. Asia -Europe ocean rates increased last week on start of month GRIs as carriers seek a price rebound especially as annual contract season gets underway on this lane. Carriers will be hoping continued congestion in Hamburg, delays in East Asia from a recent typhoon, and an increase in blanked sailings may support this rate hike even as demand eases. An early Lunar New Year and longer lead times due to Red Sea diversions could also work in carriers’ favor. China - N. America air cargo rates of $7.00/kg for the last couple weeks – the high for last year – suggests that air peak season is upon us for this lane. B2C e-commerce imports – a big driver of air volumes and rates this year – face a new challenge as the European Commission investigates Temu for the sale of illegal goods. In the US, increases in warehouse leasing by Chinese logistics companies may signal some platforms are preparing for a shift away from de minimis and air cargo. Wondering how Trump’s election win might shake things up for ocean freight? Here’s what Judah Levine, Freightos Head of Research, is seeing… Trump’s campaign message included promises of new tariffs — 10% to 20% on most of the $3 trillion in annual U.S. imports and at least 60% on all imports from China — if he won. These promises could have ripple effects for supply chains even before the January inauguration. Back in 2018, new tariff announcements led to a major pull-forward in ocean imports as shippers raced to beat the increases. Freightos Baltic Index data showed that transpacific container rates doubled from July to November 2018 as ocean volumes surged ahead of the tariff roll out in early 2019, with rates and volumes in 2019 leveling off in comparison. If shippers expect Trump to follow through on promises for new tariffs, we might see demand and rates in ocean freight start rising soon, with even more impact possible once any new tariffs are officially announced. “Partnering with Freightos is great for our customers, streamlining the booking process on key trans-Pacific routes and modernizing the way forwarders access Qantas and Jetstar capacity. With more dedicated freighter and passenger services than any other cargo operator across the Pacific, forwarders can now benefit from the addition of Qantas Freight onto WebCargo’s online booking platform.” Igor Kwiatkowski, Executive Manager at Qantas Freight
We're proud to share that Qantas Freight, the cargo division of Australia's national carrier, is now available on both WebCargo by Freightos and 7LFreight by WebCargo platforms! This partnership enables freight forwarders to search, compare, and book capacity for all Qantas and Jetstar services between the US, Australia, and New Zealand. With a strong trans-Pacific network, Qantas Freight’s digital booking access means forwarders can streamline operations across major hubs like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas/Fort Worth, New York, Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. In Barcelona later this month? Don’t miss Ian A. Arroyo at this Armstrong & Associates, Inc. event!
CMO scaling Freightos (Nasdaq: CRGO), the global freight booking platform. Loves storytelling, AI, automation, freight puns and cookie dough...and a NYT-dubbed celebrity freight nerd.
The top five global ocean logistics forwarders account for 49% of the top 20 global forwarders' TEU. That concentration is shockingly similar to air cargo's concentration with the top five air logistics forwarders handling 48% of the top air forwarders’ total air cargo tonnage. What's a little more interesting than the 1% variation is the spread. Zooming out, distribution of air cargo tonnage across the top twenty forwarders is more uniform than how total TEUs are distributed across them, with the leaders in ocean freight being more top heavy. Of course, the ocean forwarders aren't anywhere near as top-heavy as ocean carriers, but more on that later. This is all based on of Armstrong & Associates, Inc.'s industry-standard report on the top twenty five global logistics providers. That report is only the tip of the iceberg. My Freightos colleague Ian A. Arroyo will be speaking at their 3PL Value Creation Summit in Barcelona in mid-November (thanks for the invite, Jamison MIZE, MBA PMP CAPM !). Interested in joining? You can see the full lineup here. https://lnkd.in/eaiKWShj And if you're a forwarder in Barcelona, ping me - I may be able to help score you a ticket. #supplychain

Digital might just be 1s and 0s (well, unless you’re into quantum 🤓), but digitizing whole industries is far less binary. Air cargo, for instance, doesn’t go digital overnight. It’s a day-to-day push by forwarders and airlines bringing new carriers, lanes, and services online—all the time. And then, one day, you look back in the rearview mirror and see over a million bookings done a year. So let's shout out to the carriers and forwarders leading the charge with a peak into the airlines expanding their digital pricing and booking on WebCargo by Freightos this month… with a little 🎃 spirit thrown in! A huge shoutout to the WebCargo airline team for what they do, every single day! #aircargo #supplychain #transformation

The ocean market is entering its post peak season lull just as air cargo is heating up, but a looming strike deadline and the possibility of new tariffs if Trump wins next week could put renewed pressure on transpacific operations and rates. Here are the key insights from this week’s Freightos Weekly Update: 🌊 Asia – Europe ocean rates have fallen back to their Red Sea crisis era lows – though still double normal levels –- as the market enters an early post peak season/pre-Lunar New Year lull. But the usual LNY rebound may start early as the holiday begins in late January this year, and as shippers may start early to accommodate longer sailing times. An early end to peak season on the transpacific saw container rates fall sharply in October. But the added urgency for East Coast shippers to beat the October 1st strike deadline may explain the sharper October drop for East Coast prices and their extremely unusual slide below West Coast levels. Transpacific rates are still $1,000/FEU or more above their April lows though, possibly reflecting some volume strength out of concern for a January 15th port strike if ILA-USMX negotiations fail, and/or the possibility of a Trump victory and tariff increases next year. Port workers in Montreal staged a one-day strike on Sunday and have announced another – alongside the ongoing overtime strike – for Thursday, though so far these actions have not caused significant disruptions. ✈️ Reports of recent increases of air cargo volumes out of Asia suggest that air’s peak season is starting. China - N. America rates neared $7.00/kg last week, well above the $5 - $6.00/kg level held for most of the year. Prices to Europe of $3.86/kg are 12% higher than in September.
