Last week at The Economist Impact 12th annual World Ocean Summit in Tokyo, Japan, our Global Director of Sustainability - Science, Innovation & Destinations, Erika Harms, JD/MBA, joined a panel highlighting the role of tourism supporting the protection of coastal areas and destinations—an approach Iberostar Group is proud to champion. Nature sits at the heart of our sector— and why we believe it is essential to create a future that takes a systems approach to communities, nature and travel. According to estimates, nature-based solutions could provide 37% of the mitigation needed by 2030 to meet the targets of the Paris Agreement (IPBES, 2019). That's why we focus on fostering regenerative initiatives that enhance destination resilience through investment in marine conservation, sustainable infrastructure, and fostering community-led initiatives and local livelihoods that safeguard natural ecosystems. A big thanks to The Economist for inviting us to participate in these important conversations and particularly to Dominic Ziegler, senior editor, The Economist for moderating the session. #ResponsibleTourism

At Iberostar, we believe in empowering people and fostering an environment where equality leads to equity. This International Women's Day, we reflect on our commitment to inclusion, belonging, respect, and opportunity—values that guide us in creating a responsible model of tourism. Tourism is one of the most diverse industries, bringing together people from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. But to truly reflect this diversity at every level, we must continue working toward greater fairness, representation, and opportunity. Equity is not just about offering the same opportunities—it’s about recognizing individual needs and providing the right support to help everyone succeed. Our efforts must go beyond today. Through mentorship, leadership programs, and workplace policies, we are working to build an industry that is more inclusive and sustainable for future generations. #WeAreIberostar #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2025

At Iberostar, we believe tourism can be a powerful force for good. Through our Wave of Change movement, we are shaping a responsible tourism model built on seven key focus areas, striving to create a positive change on both people and the planet. From the way we source our food to how we protect nature and support local communities, every decision reflects our commitment to a better future. We work towards carbon neutrality, champion a circular economy where nothing goes to waste, promote sustainable fishing, and safeguard coastal ecosystems—all while caring for our employees and empowering communities to thrive. By integrating sustainability into our daily operations, we are redefining the way we do business—where unforgettable experiences go hand in hand with protecting and preserving our destinations. #WaveofChange #ResponsibleTourism

Tackling food waste is a challenge we approach with responsibility and action, leveraging technology and data-driven insights to make informed decisions that enhance efficiency while upholding the highest standards in our kitchens. In 2023, we took a significant step forward starting the integration of AI-driven technology in the kitchens of our hotels, preventing 921,800 kg of organic food waste compared to the previous year. And we are not stopping there—our commitment to reducing waste extends across all our destinations as we continue scaling this initiative. By harnessing the power of technology, we are not only minimizing our environmental footprint but also strengthening the value we deliver to our guests and communities. #ResponsibleTourism

For four generations, our Iberostar family has been deeply connected to the ocean, building a business with a purpose that extends far beyond today. We believe that true success is measured not just in what we achieve now, but in the positive legacy we leave for future generations. Guided by this vision, we launched Iberostar Wave of Change in 2017—a movement born from our mission to inspire a more responsible future. Since then, we have broadened our mission, striving to become carbon neutral, eliminate waste to landfill, support sustainable fishing, and restore vital coastal ecosystems—ambitious goals that drive us forward every day. Through Iberostar Wave of Change and its seven key focus areas, we are integrating sustainability into our business at every level, working to uplift communities, and build a future where people and nature thrive in harmony. #ResponsibleTourism #IberostarWaveOfChange
