On 27 September, ICARUS participated in the Research Night at CosmoCaixa in Barcelona, an initiative funded by the EU. Mar Micó Rec, Innovation Team Leader at ACCIONA (Water Business), hosted an interactive workshop to highlight ACCIONA's initiatives in circularity - including ICARUS. What is the role of cement and concrete in building more sustainable cities? 🏗️ In the journey towards a circular economy, the cement and concrete industry plays a pivotal role in reducing environmental impacts. The billions of tonnes of cement made each year account for 8% of global CO2 emissions – more than the combined emissions of aviation, trucking, and shipping. ♻️ At ICARUS, we believe upcycling is key to addressing these challenges. By rethinking how we use secondary raw materials, we can help transform industries like construction—paving the way for sustainable concrete solutions. 🌿 Y acabó el VI Congreso Internacional de Ciencias Agrarias y Ambientales CICAA 2024 ... 🌱 Contenta con la experiencia y con muchas ideas por aplicar, regreso a España después de haber participado en CICAA 2024, invitada por la Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia (UNAD) en Medellín, y donde he tenido la oportunidad de presentar varios de nuestros proyectos: CRONUS HORIZON, ELLIPSE Project, FREE4LIB, CircThread Project EU, ICARUS , WalNUT, y otros. Este congreso me ha permitido adquirir nuevas perspectivas sobre la #EconomíaCircular, que se consolida como un motor de cambio, especialmente en América Latina. ¿Qué aprendizajes me traigo a casa? ♻️ La economía circular en el sector agro-ganadero puede generar grandes impactos con inversiones mínimas, optimizando el uso de recursos y reduciendo significativamente los residuos. 🌎La importancia de aplicar estos principios a la realidad local de América Latina, demostrando que un enfoque adaptado a cada región es clave para obtener resultados sostenibles. 👩🌾El papel crucial que desempeñan las mujeres en esta revolución silenciosa, liderando iniciativas y siendo un pilar fundamental en la transformación hacia prácticas más sostenibles y equitativas. Regreso convencida de que estos aprendizajes no solo son relevantes a nivel global, sino que también pueden aplicarse en nuestro entorno local para promover un cambio real y sostenible. Have you heard of the Embraced project? 🗞 Absorbent Hygiene Products (AHP) Waste: Used nappies, menstrual products, and wipes are often considered non-recyclable municipal waste. Each year, Europe incinerates or landfills 8,500,000 tons of this waste. 💡 The EMBRACED Project: This initiative has demonstrated a replicable, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable biorefinery model. By utilising the cellulosic fraction of AHP waste, EMBRACED produces bio-based building blocks, polymers, and fertilisers. ♻ Circular Economy: The biorefinery operates on a circular economy model, closing the loop on raw materials and minimising the use of primary resources. Both EMBRACED and the #ICARUSEUProject target similar challenges and solutions in waste management, focusing on upcycling urban waste into valuable resources.
