👩🔬 Former IMDEA Materials researcher Dr. Wei Shao (邵未) was one of the contributing authors on the recent paper, "Design, preparation, and double-mechanism strengthening effect analysis of Sn-Zn-Al-Pt solder alloy with high service performance," featured in Materials Science and Engineering: A. The publication provides valuable insights into the development of high-performance solder alloys for electronic packaging applications. Some of the study's highlighted findings include: ➡️ The design and preparation of a high-service performance Sn-Zn-Al-Pt solder alloy. ➡️ Results demonstrating the effect of adding Pt (Platinum) in decreasing the melting point of the Sn-9Zn-0.02Al solder alloy. ➡️ How the appropriate addition of Pt during the service stage of the solder joint can effectively capture diffused Al atoms, preventing their segregation at Sn grain boundaries and avoiding grain boundary embrittlement. And more. Researchers involved in the publication also included those from the University of Science and Technology Beijing and the Chinese Army Academy of Armored Forces. Dr. Shao recently completed her Ph.D. at IMDEA Materials on the accurate prediction of phase diagrams of binary alloys from first-principles calculations and statistical mechanics. 📽️ Don't forget to check out the latest video from the European AID4GREENEST Project, coordinated by IMDEA Materials Institute! In the latest entry, the project finds out more about the work being done by Senior Research and Development Scientist Dr. Dr. Daria M. Tomecka from ePotentia, an SME focused on full-stack AI development, ranging from efficient data gathering to large-scale cloud deployment.
👩🔬 In this edition of our 'Meet the AID4GREENEST team' series, we speak with Dr. Dr. Daria M. Tomecka, Senior Research and Development Scientist at ePotentia. Daria shares with us her role in developing advanced AI tools that predict how processing conditions affect microstructures, as well as reverse engineering to achieve optimised microstructures. The ePotentia AID4GREENEST team also includes Michael Sluydts, Barbara Lis and Catharina Jaeken. As part of their role in AID4GREENEST, ePotentia has created an open platform for microscopy data, MicrostructureDB, which you can find here: https://lnkd.in/dxKYjHJj. Alongside ePotentia, AID4GREENEST's project partners include coordinators IMDEA Materials Institute, EurA AG, Fraunhofer IWM, Ghent University, the University of Liège, UNE - Asociación Española de Normalización, the University of Oulu, REINOSA FORGINGS & CASTINGS SL and OCAS NV. 🌍 Are those northern lights at the poles and the Equator? Or are they just grains in a preferred orientation? This colourful electron backscatter diffraction map and pole figures of a MgZnCa alloy are the result of research from Guillermo Domínguez, a member of our Biometals, Coatings & Devices (BCD) research group led by Dr. Monica Echeverry Rendon. You could be forgiven for assuming that they represent an atmospheric phenomenon happening on our planet. Nothing could be further from the truth. These spheres are actually representations of important information regarding the microscopic structure of metals. 🤔 Intrigued to find out more? Check out February's 'Image of the Month' and the BCD group website: https://lnkd.in/d_U4HKAG! 👩🔬 The BCD group also includes researchers Dr. Monsur Islam, Dr. Mahdi Sabbaghian, Dr. Jesús Ordoño, PhD, Ángela García de la Camacha Díaz, Yuyao Liu, Nafiseh Mollaei and Dr. Adrian Bouzas (visiting).

💪 IMDEA Materials: leader in MSCA PF fellowships in Spain for third consecutive year IMDEA Materials Institute has once again ranked among the leading recipients of Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA PF) projects in Spain, with 8 projects awarded in the 2024 call. This places the institute as the third Spanish institution in terms of the number of fellowships granted, behind only the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Universitat de Barcelona, two institutions much larger than IMDEA Materials. 🗣️ “The MSCA PF program is a fundamental tool for research centres like IMDEA Materials, as it offers exceptional flexibility compared to other European funding,” said Germán Infante, head of technology transfer and pre-award at IMDEA Materials. 🗣️ The MSCA PF has been a significant milestone in my scientific career. I couldn’t think of a better place to pursue it than IMDEA Materials, which provides a vibrant and collaborative research environment and access to cutting-edge facilities,” said Dr. Monsur Islam, MSCA PF at the Institute. 🔬 New possibilities for probing the optical, dielectric and electronic properties of nanomaterials through improved Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM) Last week, we were pleased to welcome a guest seminar on the evolution of TEM capacities from Raúl Arenal, group leader of the Nanoscopy on Low Dimensional Materials group at the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón (CSIC-Universidad de Zaragoza). Dr. Arenal is also the coordinator of the TEM area at the Advanced Microscopy Laboratory at UNIZAR. He presented a selection of recent works taking advantage of these new capacities in TEM, particularly in relation to the study of the atomic structure and configuration of nanostructures. He also discussed studies into opto-electronic properties carried out via electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements of different kinds of low-dimensional materials. He was invited to speak at IMDEA Materials by Dr. Juan José Vilatela. We thank Dr. Arenal for his time and for sharing his expertise with our researchers!

😍 With a scientific and administrative team now approaching 160 talented researchers, technicians, project managers, administrative staff and more, it's not often that we have the opportunity to get everyone together for a photo! 📸 That's why it is always such a pleasure to assemble for our annual group picture, which was taken earlier this month. 🚀 From just a handful of dedicated researchers and staff in 2007, IMDEA Materials has grown dramatically over the past 18 years, and we're only looking forward to adding many more new faces in the year to come! 😊 We would like to recognise predoctoral researcher, Felipe Lozano Steinmetz, who successfully passed his First Year Assessment (FYA) earlier this month! Felipe is a member of our Multifunctional Nanocomposites research group, led by Juan José Vilatela, where he is working on the European #UNIYARNS project (ERC-2021-COG/01045394) for a universal processing route for high-performance nanostructured yarns. His FYA was centred on research into the mechanics of #nanowire networks and other materials with planar symmetry, presenting micromechanical models capable of predicting their mechanical properties and failure probability. The analysis considers stress redistribution and the influence of new orientation parameters. You can find out more about the UNIYARNS project here: https://lnkd.in/dcy5jYz7 Successfully completing his FYA is a major step forward for Felipe in completing his Ph.D. in the coming years! Ana Inés De Isidro Gómez, Anastasiia Mikhalchan, Dr. David Tilve Martínez, Elena Sánchez Ahijón, Nabil Abomailek Rubio, Raúl D., Soheila Ebrahimi-Koodehi, Zahid Ali Zafar.
