Last week at TIS - Tourism Innovation Summit, I had the pleasure to join a group of industry and policy leaders on the panel Summit of Historic Cities: Innovation and Challanges in Tourism. Together with Laura Navarrete (Madrid), Mariano Angelucci (Roma Capitale), Antonio López de Ávila Muñoz (UN Tourism) and hosted by Ana María Marquez (Mabrian Technologies Official), we spoke about the challenges and paradox of the popular historical city when it comes to (over)tourism. 👩💻 Is the city ever truly yours - as residents - to rule over or are you (also) just another passer-by, in pursuit of your happiness and is the visitor in pursuit of theirs? In that case, how magnificent is it that they chose your city to look for that happiness? ⁉ But then, can you actually love a city trip when you understand that residents have a strong feeling against your visit? Not out of hate but because they feel you as a visitor create an almost unbearable pressure on the livability for residents. ❓ Can you as a city feel high anticipation towards visitors, knowing that these visitors will drive more pressure on the residents' wellbeing? When you know that historically, visitors bring new flavors, cultures, languages and potential prosperity? 💭 Following this train of thought, is it not our duty to answer the question: “How can we look after the heritage of our historic city centers and function as welcoming gatekeepers of our heritage?” Amsterdam’s popularity for travelers will not disappear any time soon. The residents’ love for the city will (probably never) disappear. Therefore, the combination resulting in the economic opportunity will stay very relevant. In a system where one of the incentives in prosperity is to be able to travel the world, the growth of tourism will not (soon) decline. The question is not how to stop tourism, the question is how to influence visitor’s behavior. Visitors should not be translated into euros. Visitors should not be seen as a commodity. When we lose sight of the fundamental human exchange of host and visitor, we will lose a vital basic human need. If we want to be part of the future of travel, we need to truly understand people's motives, orientation, interests and answer to these desires to create understanding from visitors and behavioural adaptation. If cities combine their vistitor's needs with theirs, you can actually find a balance between residents and visitors and work towards a regenerative tourism industry. What are your spreading techniques? How do you develop diverse and attractive commercial centres rather than focusing on the vulnerable historic centres? Do you dare to create blockbusters outside the usual areas?
