As part of our ongoing series #CurrENTTechTuesdays, we are showcasing the #InnovativeGridTechnologies that we based our study with Compass Lexecon, supported by Breakthrough Energy on, ‘Prospects for Innovative Power Grid Technologies’. The results of the study showed that there is a massive need for grid expansion, with a 20 – 65% increase at the DSO level required by 2040. This week's technology in the spotlight is #DigitalTwin Digital twins are virtual representations that use data on the network (e.g. voltage level) and exogenous data (e.g. topography, weather, generation) to model the status of the network in real time, allowing for grid monitoring without physical intervention on the equipment or infrastructure. They use existing data from sensors and meters and also provides insights where there are no sensors available. Digital twins add additional capability for simulating future behaviour of the grid to traditional control systems and can analyse the impact of changes, such as load and generation growth, as well as changes to grid infrastructure. What are the key benefits? ⚡ Digital Twins can reduce OPEX levels through reduced outage time and customer compensation cost, reduced field operations by faster and more accurate detection of faults and lines 💶 Digital Twins can reduce CAPEX levels through reduced need for sensors to monitor grid status and by enabling operators to forecast congestions and voltage violations 🤝 Digital twins can also be combined with physical grid sensors to increase the reliability of estimates. 💻 Digital twins can facilitate better asset management, where the assets lifetimes can be extended by up to 25% All information in this post comes from Compass Lexecon’s study, ‘Prospects for Innovative Power Grid Technologies’: https://lnkd.in/dkiaW9vz Plexigrid |
