Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary is a leading international art and advocacy foundation.

Sobre nosotros

TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary is a leading international art and advocacy foundation. Established in 2002 by philanthropist and art patron Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza, the Foundation stewards the TBA21 Collection and its outreach activities, which include exhibitions as well as educational and public programming. TBA21 is based in Madrid, working in association with the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, and has other important poles of action in Venice (Italy) and Portland (Jamaica). All activity at TBA21 is fundamentally driven by artists and the belief in art and culture as a carrier of social and environmental transformation, ultimately contributing to the creation of spaces for peace. TBA21–Academy is the foundation’s research arm, fostering a deeper relationship with the Ocean and other bodies of water by working as an incubator for collaborative inquiry, artistic production, and environmental advocacy. For more than a decade, the Academy has catalyzed new forms of knowledge emerging from the exchanges between art, science, policy, and conservation in long-term and collaborative engagement through fellowships, residency programs, and activities in a wide variety of formats. Among its main projects are the art center Ocean Space (Venice), the independent study program Organismo | Art in Applied Critical Ecologies (Madrid, Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza), Alligator Head Foundation (Port Antonio, Jamaica), The Current Pacific/ Mediterranean/Caribbean, the online initiative Ocean-Archive.org with OCEAN / UNI, and Bauhaus of the Sea Sails.

  • We are honored to announce that on Friday, February 7, TBA21–Academy’s Ocean Space was awarded the Innovation and Sustainability in Art prize at the inaugural Flash Art Italia Awards. The award, created by Flash Art in collaboration with Arte Fiera, aims to recognize an artistic or cultural project that has been able to connect Innovation and Sustainability by positively impacting the environment and society. The jury selected Ocean Space for the category winner, as “demonstrating how art can be a powerful tool for raising awareness and understanding of contemporary ecological challenges, the project stands out for its ability to translate complex environmental issues into engaging and meaningful art experiences”.  Since its opening in 2019, Ocean Space has served as a dynamic hub for artistic and scientific collaboration, advocating for ocean literacy and climate action through exhibitions, research initiatives, and public programs. At TBA21, we are dedicated to fostering fostering a deeper cultural and artistic engagement with pressing planetary concerns. Thus, this recognition is an important confirmation of the value of art as a tool for cultural and social transformation. We would like to once again thank Flash Art Italia and the jury for believing in our mission and all of you for your enthusiasm and commitment.

  • 🦠🎙️ We took part in one of the round tables of the #PÚBLICA25 program of the Fundación Contemporánea: ‘Reimagining institutions for climate action’. During the presentation, three key projects for the Foundation were presented, which invite us to continue working on new ways of understanding institutions: 1️⃣ The Zoöp model, an initiative of Nieuwe Instituut, born in a cultural institution to rethink the governance of institutions by giving representation to non-humans. 2️⃣ Oceanofuturisms. A project that fuses scientific rigour and speculative fiction to transcend catastrophic scenarios and imagine other possible futures for the ocean. This project is developed within the framework of the Independent Study Program Organism | Art in Applied Critical Ecologies. 3️⃣ Bauhaus of the Seas Sails, in the framework of New European Bauhaus. A multi-agent and multi-scale interdisciplinary collaboration that brings together cultural institutions, administrations, universities and scientists in sustainable design processes. The speakers delved into each of the initiatives to explain all the details to those present and emphasize the work of TBA21 in its commitment to the more-than-human. 💭 Participants: Jon Aranguren Juaristi (part of the Organismo team), Eduardo Castillo (architect and curator), Rosa Ferré (Co-director of TBA21), Marina Avia Estrada (Head of Exhibitions and Public Program of TBA21), Uriel Fogué Herreros and Eva Gil (part of the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails team).

Some months ago we announced the winners of three new artists' residencies in Venice, [Carlos Casas, Nandita Kumar and Adelita Husni-Bey] organized in the context of the STARTS Residency Program dedicated to water sustainability and innovation. This is our second collaboration with the European Commission initiative as a Member of the Consortium. 🤝 (Waag Futurelab, OGR Torino, Camargo Foundation, PiNA, biennale . wien) 🧑🔬👩🎨 The residencies are designed to allow an in-depth exploration of the Venice Lagoon's ecologies, connecting a network of local partners and experts with situated artistic inquiry. Over the course of nine months 🗓️, the three selected artists will develop new artistic commissions focused on the lagoon's ecosystem and its multi-species inhabitants, investigating the role of the ports ⚓ from different perspectives. 📢 Stay tuned to hear more about the development of their projects!
