I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Walid Khoury 🐸 and the Water Environment Federation for orchestrating this invaluable panel discussion. I'm honored to be joining the panel alongside esteemed colleagues Mohannad Malki, Beau Schilz Miguel Pinto, Spencer Pierini, MBA, PE and Juan Miguel Pinto. We're eagerly anticipating the opportunity to merge our collective expertise and share it on one of the most prestigious platforms in our industry - #WEFTEC. The global water landscape presents both challenges and opportunities. With the planet's rivers totaling approximately 2,000 km³, we're nearing a critical juncture where we discharge nearly 400 km³ of #wastewater into surface water bodies. While just over 50% of this wastewater volume receives treatment, a mere 1% addresses #emergingcontaminants - a stark reminder of the work ahead. After three years of intensive research in this field, if I had to identify the area with the greatest potential for the Water Positive initiative, it would undoubtedly be wastewater treatment, with water reuse as the cornerstone of our approach. How can we realize this potential? I invite you to join our panel tomorrow at 10 AM to delve into our strategic vision. It's not about continuing to visualize how many people we might leave behind for 2050. Instead, it's about envisioning a future where, by taking the right actions, we don't have to leave anyone behind. Let's focus on implementing what we know needs to be done. Let's embark on this journey together, turning challenges into opportunities for a #waterpositive future.

#WaterQuestion In your experience, what are the biggest challenges faced by organizations in becoming #waterpositive, and how can they be overcome? How can regulatory frameworks support or hinder the transition to water-positive practices in various industries? What role does community engagement play in promoting sustainable water practices, and how can companies effectively foster this engagement? These are some of the questions that I will be asking fellow water leaders at #WEFTEC2024 Joining me: Alejandro Sturniolo from the Water Positive Think Tank Mohannad Malki from AWC (American Water Chemicals) Juan Miguel Pinto from Energy Recovery, Inc. Beau Schilz from Amazon Web Services (AWS) Spencer Pierini, MBA, PE from Bristol Myers Squibb Come join us at the Global Center at WEFTEC. Thank you Laila Sukkariyyah and the Water Environment Federation for creating this space for dialogue.

Yesterday was a great day from the point of view of the support of organizations to the Water Positive initiative and Think Tank. Belén Ramos Alcalde, representative of international relations of AGA-AEAS, the Spanish association of water management companies, drinking water supply and sanitation and Domingo Zarzo Martinez, PhD, president of the Spanish desalination and reuse association (AEDyR) signed the roll up with the logo of W+ expressing their support to this initiative. This happened during the conference organized by AEDyR about the nexus water-energy. The roll up, which will become the "Hall of Fame of Water Positive" will be in conferences and events to be signed by supporting associations and CEOs of important companies of the sector. At the end of the conference all the thintankers were present for a family group photo, including (from left to the right): Jorge J. Malfeito-Sánchez , Eduardo Orteu , José Carlos G. , Daniele Strongone , Domingo Zarzo Martinez, PhD , Borja Blanco , Eva Jalón González , Paula Pérez Sánchez , Silvia Gallego , Miguel Angel Sanz BELÉN GUTIÉRREZ , Elena de la Vieja Molina and Jesús Rivas. Others, like Ana Isabel Lopez left the conference before the photo, missing this historic moment 😁.

Hurricanes Helena and Milton are reminders that global warming and climate change are real! Two weeks ago, Hurricane Helana caused over 230 confirmed deaths in the US, with hundreds of people missing, hundreds of thousands displaced and stranded, and nearly 1 million homes without power. It also caused massive flooding, landslides, aquifer contaminations, and home and infrastructural devastations that could reach over 225 billion dollars. Helana began as a tropical storm and was upgraded to a category 1 hurricane and then a category 4 hurricane, packing winds up to 140mph (225km/h). In the coming days, the US state of Florida is bracing for hurricane Milton- a category 5 storm. It is alarming that, given this and numerous other regional and global environmental damage footprints, politicians are still questioning whether the science of climate change is “real” or “science fiction.” Perhaps this is because the symptoms of climate change are many, ranging from: · Rising Seawater Levels: from glacier and polar ice cap melting · Extreme Weather Events: hurricanes, floods, droughts, heatwaves, wildfires · Food in security: soil degradation, crop yield impacts · Aquifer depletion and contamination: overuse due to droughts, seawater, and wastewater contamination due to the impact of extreme weather events. · Ocean Acidification and Marine Ecosystem Disruptions: Excessive CO2 absorption disrupts shellfish, coral, and mollusk ecosystems. · Aquatic and terrestrial loss of biodiversity · Public Health Crises: Increase in disease and pathogenic vectors like mosquitos, heat stress, reduced air quality, and increased pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases. · Water Insecurity: Water shortage, contamination, and increased water mismanagement. It is indisputable that the anthropogenic causes of climate change pose an existential threat—not only to economic supply chains but also to human existence. Climate change and global warming directly impact water sustainability and security. Purifying non-conventional water sources (the Water Positive Inatitive) is essential to maintaining water health and safety during climate-impact crises and water security. #water #watersecurity #hurricanes #climatechange #desalination #USA #Mexico #LatinAmerica
