One day after EssilorLuxottica announced its deal to acquire Supreme from VF Corporation, Meta, Facebook's owner, is in talks to acquire a stake of about 5% in the eyewear company. Based on recent market value, a roughly 5% stake could be valued at around $5 billion, a relatively small for Meta, given its market value of around $1.2 trillion. EssilorLuxottica makes Meta's Ray Ban smart glasses and sales of the glasses have exceeded expectations. The devices, an important part of Meta’s hardware strategy, allow users to take photos and listen to music with the frames of their glasses, among other features. Maintaining ties with Luxottica is crucial for the success of smart glasses devices and the company’s ambitions to build the so-called metaverse, which is a term used to describe people interacting in a 3-D version of the internet simultaneously. A third generation of Ray-Ban Meta glasses, expected to include a small screen display, is expected to be ready for consumers in time for the 2025 holiday season. The allure of Luxottica’s Ray-Ban brand is important to the success of a tech device that users are expected to wear on their faces. Luxottica’s ownership of LensCrafters, the prescription-eyewear retailer, also plays a key role in selling the Ray-Ban Meta to users who require prescription lenses. The two companies began working together several years ago for the release of the first generation Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses, which went on sale in 2021. The initial device struggled to catch on with consumers, and among the glasses that were sold, only 10% of the Ray-Ban Stories were actively used by their purchasers. The second-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses went on sale in September and have done significantly better than their predecessors. The Ray-Ban Meta glasses operate more quickly and have better cameras than their predecessor. The Ray-Ban Meta also includes nascent generative #AI technology that allows users to ask the device for information about the things in front of them, such as the breed of a cat. The Ray-Ban Meta glasses have proven popular for users who want to shoot hands-free videos of their children playing and first-person videos of themselves while going on roller coasters or riding bikes. Meta hasn’t said how well the Ray-Ban Meta glasses have sold, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in April that the device was doing well and that a market for that type of device was developing sooner than he would have expected. Meta sells its own devices to employees at a discount, and offers the Ray-Ban Meta glasses at a 15% discount with a limit of 3 pairs per employee. The investment on becoming more sustainable in the fashion industry is still extremely small. Even a brand like Ganni whom many consumers see as sustainable published in their report for 2023 that they spent 0.60% of total revenue on responsibility down from 2022 1.10%. This week seeing the closure of brands such as Mara Hoffman is also depressing. The only effort to move the needle has mainly been driven by a combination of legislation and more mindful production of goods. The system is still flawed due to its drive for continuous projection of double digit sales increases. The saddest part is the huge increase of product thru Shein and Temu flooding the market with cheap, questionable labor and possible toxic product at an accelerated rate never seen before. For those who are not aware From 2017 through to the first half of 2023, Shein revenues grew 20x, from $1.5 billion to $40 billion, surpassing Amazon as the single most downloaded shopping app in the US while racing past Zara for the overall number one spot in US fast fashion.  The fair wage and abuse of garment workers is another problem created by low priced fast fashion. The take away sadly from this years Global Fashion Summit is that though there is some investment in innovation we simply are not moving as an industry fast enough to reduce emissions nor improving the system to produce less. I wish on this Friday I had better news but sadly we need consumers and leaders to drive real change.

The answer lies in two primary factors: cost structure and brand positioning.  Cost Structure 💸 1. Higher Operational Costs:   - Salaries and Rents: The cost of living in places like Paris' Champs-Élysées or New York's 5th Avenue is significantly higher than in Spain. This means higher salaries for staff, more expensive rents for store locations, and generally higher operational costs.   - Supplies and Logistics: Many of the supplies, logistics, and other operational expenses are costlier in these countries due to their economic environment. 2. Import Duties and Taxes:   - Customs in Brazil: Brazil is particularly protective of its local industry and imposes high customs duties on imported goods. For instance, a T-shirt that costs €100 in production might incur an additional 30% due to import taxes. This added cost is inevitably passed on to the consumer.  Brand Positioning 🏷️ 1. Market Strategy:   - Exclusivity and Affordability: Zara tailors its pricing strategy based on how exclusive and affordable it wants to position its products in each market. In some countries, a higher price can elevate the brand's perceived exclusivity and align it with premium expectations. 2. Local Market Dynamics:   - Consumer Purchasing Power: The pricing also reflects the local consumers' purchasing power and market competition. In wealthier markets, higher prices can be justified by the higher disposable income of consumers.  Lessons in Pricing and Positioning 📚✨ Understanding the rationale behind Zara’s pricing can offer valuable lessons: - Operational Costs and Local Economics: Pricing strategies must account for local economic conditions, including operational costs and consumer purchasing power. - Import Regulations: Countries with high import duties require brands to adjust their pricing to cover additional costs. - Brand Perception: Pricing isn’t just about covering costs but also about how the brand wants to be perceived in different markets. Kering’s struggles: can Gucci regain tts footing amid leadership changes and strategic shifts? The news of Kering’s latest earnings report sent shockwaves through the industry, with Gucci’s 25% decline leading a 16% drop in overall sales for the group. While the luxury sector as a whole faces headwinds, it’s clear that Kering’s biggest challenge remains its flagship brand. After years of rapid growth driven by Alessandro Michele and Marco Bizzarri, we are now seeing the cracks in a strategy that may have prioritized short-term gains over long-term stability. Gucci’s creative reset under Sabato de Sarno hasn’t yet resonated with the broader luxury consumer base, especially those occasional buyers that fuel megabrands like Gucci. The brand is in the midst of a critical transition, attempting to balance between maintaining its relevance in an evolving luxury landscape and rebuilding a perception of exclusivity that may have been diluted in recent years. But can new leadership, and a revamped accessory line, truly turn the tide? What’s interesting is how this echoes a recurring theme in the industry: Did Bizzarri and Michele push too hard too fast? Was Gucci’s explosion of street style, which disrupted the very notion of luxury, too focused on the momentary appeal without truly building a timeless foundation? The numbers today suggest that perhaps Gucci’s growth wasn’t structurally sound for the long-term, and now the brand is in a race to re-establish its core identity. Meanwhile, Kering faces hard decisions. Exploring store closures, particularly in Greater China, signals a shift towards consolidating around stronger retail locations. But while Gucci’s leadership scrambles to restore balance, Kering must also walk a tightrope—keeping up marketing and promotional spend even as revenue shrinks. The continued success of legacy brands like BIRKENSTOCK depends partly on their ability to observe, listen and acknowledge the social lives of their shoes, whether or not those stories fit with intended brand strategies. Shoes often find their way onto the most unexpected feet and in places and situations outside anyone's control. This is what gives them their vitality and value. Birkenstock's recent book, "Birkenstock: The Evolution of a Universal Purpose and Zeitgeist Brand," celebrates 250 years of the iconic brand and demonstrates its commitment to honouring a diversity of wearer experiences and supporting the continued cultural relevance of its iconic shoes. Footwear Research Network contributor Dr Emily Brayshaw joins 14 other historians from around the world who were given access to the Birkenstock Group company archive, which has been maintained by Simon Kahles since 2016 and is now curated by the book’s editor and managing director of the German Society for Business History, Dr. Andrea H. Schneider. Emily's two chapters span a 30-year history of the shoe: “Birkenstock in Australia 1992 to 2022: A Stable Shoe for Shifting Terrains in Australia”; and “From Hilarious Hippies to Hair-Raising Horror and High Fashion: 30 Years of Birkenstocks in Film”. 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀: 𝗭𝗔𝗥𝗔 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗳é 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 This weekend we have assisted to the #Zacaffè's opening inside Zara MAN’s first standalone store in Madrid. This is not Zara's first venture into cafes, but it is indeed the first official Zacaffè. I see this as a strategic shift towards offering lifestyle-focused experiences, a path paved by luxury brands in recent years. Luxury has long understood that consumer experience is king, and integrating gastronomy into flagship spaces has been a game-changer and it's a well established strategy. Some recent examples: 👜 Louis Vuitton: Their temporary NYC store on East 57th Street includes the brand’s first U.S. café. Btw: This flagship store is impressive. 🏛️ Dior: At 30 Avenue Montaigne in Paris, the boutique transforms into a multi-sensory experience with a museum, a café, and the gastronomic "Monsieur Dior" restaurant. 🍰 GENTLE MONSTER: Sitting in the premium segment, their Seoul flagship includes "NUDAKE," a stunning café and pâtisserie that creates an artistic experience, blending eyewear retail with their iconic croissant fixtures. When I visited it last spring, we were really impressed. 😍 They have recently opened a "Gym café" in their flagship store in Shanghai. I see certain similarities here with Zara's strategy as Nudake's concept can live also alone and not always integrated in Gentle Monster's environment. The idea of Zacaffè seems to go in the same direction. What makes the #Zacaffè more significant is its placement inside the newly launched Zara MAN, the first global independent store for men’s fashion under the brand. Spanning 700 square meters, this space reflects Zara’s commitment to elevating its retail offering: 🛍️ Integrated Customer Service Spaces: Streamlined areas for returns and purchases, making the experience smoother for everyone. 🚫🔒  No More Rigid Security Tags: Elevating the presentation and adding a sense of luxury to the shopping experience. ☕️ And the Café Experience: Inviting customers to linger, relax, and connect with the brand beyond just shopping. In my opinion, Zara wants to position itself closer to premium experiences and further from the traditional fast fashion narrative. It mirrors how brands like Louis Vuitton and Dior use lifestyle offerings to deepen emotional connections with customers, making each visit an event rather than a transaction. With luxury brands experiencing a slowdown this year and Bain & Company forecasting much lower trend compared to the rapid recovery years post-pandemic, it's clear that the pressure is on luxury brands to redefine how they engage their customer to differentiate. 📣 What do you think? Here’s how to handle it: 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 It’s tough, but remember: feedback is not a reflection of your worth as a person. It's an assessment of your actions or how others perceive your behaviors in a specific context. Just because someone labels you as “pushy” doesn’t mean it’s true across the board. It's a lens, not a full picture of who you are. 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗔𝗿𝗲 It’s natural to want to fix yourself when you feel misunderstood, but you don’t have to conform to someone else’s idea of how you should be. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 Ask yourself: Does this feedback truly reflect how I want to show up as a leader? Is it in line with my values? 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 When the feedback feels harsh, try to engage in a constructive dialogue. Ask for specific examples of the behavior being referenced, and explore solutions with your team or manager on how to align expectations moving forward. You’ll likely find that the feedback is less about you and more about perceptions - and that can be worked through. 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 In the fashion industry, empathy and fun are incredibly valuable leadership traits. Use those qualities to approach the feedback with understanding, even if it’s tough. Express that you’re open to growth, but that you also value a two-way conversation about how your leadership can work for the team - and not just what’s wrong. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 When feedback hits hard, it’s important to care for your emotional health.
