La incorporación de la evidencia a la toma de decisiones en salud pueda tomar decadas. Un excelente (pero lamentable) ejemplo es como se ignora el impacto negativo de la baja dotación de enfermeras/os en los outcomes de pacientes. La dotacíon y carga de trabajo en Enfermeria son problematicas complejas. Este articulo de Chiara Dall'Ora y Peter Griffiths publicado en JAMA muestran el impacto de la composicíon del equipo de enfermeria (EU, TENS, personal externo, pool, de agencias): - Menor número de enfermeras/os = riesgo aumentado de mortalidad - Uso elevado de personal temporal = riesgo aumentado de mortalidad - El tener enfermeras/os experimentados no elimina los riesgos asociados a la baja dotacion. Conclusión: Se debe invertir en cargos para enfermeras/os en vez de personal temporal y/o externo para suplir los deficits de dotación en Enfermeria.
Our latest paper looking at hospital nursing team composition and patient risk of death is finally out. Led by Peter Griffiths, we found that low RN staffing = higher hazard of death. High use of temporary staff also increases hazard of death. We also found that having senior nurses in the team did not eliminate the adverse outcomes associated with low nurse staffing. Invest in providing permanent positions for RNs rather than relying on temporary staffing to fill the gaps.

For our profession to rise, it no longer suits us to speak only to ourselves, negotiate amongst our own profession. We're talking about genuine leadership, the kind that fights for us, the nurses who are the backbone of this whole healthcare thing! 𝐖𝐞'𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐭, 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭? Nurses who get promoted, get that manager badge, and suddenly they're robots following every rule, forgetting the struggles we face every day. Following the status quo might seem safe, but it doesn't make for a great leader, especially not for nurses! 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠: A true nurse leader is a champion. They advocate for us. They fight for better staffing, for safer working conditions, for nursing profession that make our jobs easier and let us focus on what truly matters – our patients! Sure, protocols are important. Safety comes first. But a good leader knows that sometimes, those protocols need to be adapted to fit the situation on the ground. They'll listen to our concerns, our ideas, and work with us to find solutions that benefit everyone. 🔅𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬: We're all in this crazy hospital maze, right? Patients need our care, but sometimes the outdated map (those old protocols) makes it hard to get where we need to go quickly. A genuine nurse leader is like that awesome navigator who knows the secret shortcuts, who can bend the rules a little (when it's safe!) to get the best care to our patients, while still keeping us nurses safe and sane. ✴️ 𝐒𝐨, 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬? ↪️ 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧. They value our input and experience, not just the voices of doctors or administrators. ↪️ 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐬! They advocate for better pay, resources, and working conditions. ↪️ 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲'𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞. They're open to new ideas and ways to improve patient care and the nursing experience. ↪️ 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲'𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞. They're not some distant authority figure, they're part of the team. Remember, leadership isn't just about a title. It's about heart. It's about standing up for what's right, for our patients, and for ourselves. So, let's hold those leaders accountable!
