Earlier this week, the inaugural Esports World Cup kicked off in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. At least 27 brands and organizations are sponsoring the 22 game tournament and festival with $60M in prizes up for grabs. I went through and put together a list of the brand partners for the event. They are roughly evenly split between esports endemic brands, non-endemic brands and local Saudi brands and government projects. Is it easy? Esports, to the outside world, seems like an easy job. "Don't you just play video games or teach people how to play video games?" I wish I could say it was different on the inside, but the fact of the matter is that many coaches or esports directors think that they can coast by and just teach people how to play video games. There is a misunderstanding of where we are in the lifecycle of the esports industry. We are still building. We need people that have the desire to create structure, people who have the flexibility to work odd hours, and people with a passion to bring about an entire ecosystem change. We don't need gamers looking for a an easy job. This industry is in startup mode. It's in the second phase of its structural identity, and if we don't put the right people in the right places, we will see collapse after collapse in each and every esports vertical. This is a historic moment. The IOC has announced the creation of the Olympic Esports Games! The first Olympic Esports Games will be held in 2025 in Saudi Arabia. I have long said that esports will transform in the coming years. With the development of XR technologies, it is becoming clear that many game mechanics, currently existing in the PC-monitor paradigm, will be able to transform by utilizing real locations and the human body's capabilities. Recognizing esports as an Olympic discipline is an important step towards this transformation.
