This is a good article to a point. It highlights the problems but doesn't give examples of solutions. It says one way to decolonize the classroom is to give students a voice in their learning. What does that look like for new #educators in #education ? Universally designed learning approaches can help give students choice. For example: the lesson is theme or reinforcing what theme is. Keep the teacher model a video or short story (maybe even a children's book). Model how to find theme. Now for student independent work and practice, give them options. Options for what story they want to practice with: ▪️video like "Hair Love" from Mathew A. Cherry ▪️short story like "Fish Cheeks" by Amy Tan ▪️video like "For the birds" a Pixar short ▪️short story like "7th Grade from Gary Soto Then provide options of how they display their knowledge of theme of a story: 🔸️short paragraph 🔸️verbal response that is recorded 🔸️slides presentation 🔸️poster If you are in a position in which you cannot provide choice in the text or video they use, then give choice in how the show it. Vice versus as well. Or maybe you cannot use videos in the classroom (which would be great for low level readers) but only texts. Websites can sometimes offer a read aloud option for the short stories.
