  • Bio and Emerging Technology Institute (BETin)  with Foldscope donated by ICGEB held the first Foldscope Training on March,05,2024 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The training covered basic microscopy skills, parts of the microscope and the importance of using foldscope in scientific exercise at school level.  In his opening remark  Kassahun Tesfaye (PhD), Director General for BETin, said the training on Foldscope for high school girls is a wonderful opportunity  to empower young girls in the field of Life Sciences. The training aimed at inspiring school girls to explore their surrounding and also promot STEM at school. Foldscope is a low-cost paper microscope that allows students to explore the microscopic world around them.   Institute researcher Ms. Genet Degene and  others have been involved in this first round training and demonstrated how to assemble a Foldscope and  use it.  Overall, the training on Foldscope for Temenja Yazh and Yewuket Fana Grade 7th and 8th junior school girls was a success, inspiring the students to explore the world of microscopy and sparking their interest in life sciences. It is noted that Bio and Emerging Technology Institute is closely working with the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB ) in various areas of Research Collaborations, and this foldscope was also donated by BiotechNet Project funded by Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (@AICS).
