The first five years of life, from birth to age five, are foundational for human development. During peak sensitive periods, growth is fueled by meaningful interactions, and engaging diverse experiences. Children need a nurturing environment that encourages curiosity and allows them to explore the world, near and far, absorbing information that shapes their cognitive, emotional, and social development. Providing children with rich, stimulating early experiences, aligned with a deep understanding of children's development helps to build a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Knowledge gained in these early years forms the basis for all future learning and skill development throughout their lives. #earlyeducaitonethiopia #indigenouslearning #leadingwithchildren

Last week, countless children and families celebrated the start of a new school year, with many beginning their educational journey at preschool. However, for millions of children around the world, this opportunity remains out of reach. In Ethiopia alone, over 4 million preschool-aged children are out of school and face mounting barriers to starting early education, attending regularly, and staying in school. This concerning reality is exacerbated by significant disparities in learning environments and a severe lack of investment in early childhood education, particularly in rural communities. Addressing these inequities is essential to giving every child a fair and strong start to their education. Why should this concern us? The first five years of life shape who we become as adults. Early experiences profoundly influence how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. Early childhood education is not just about learning to read and count; it nurtures empathy, encourages critical thinking, strengthens self-regulation, and fosters the ability to build peaceful relationships. Ensuring access to quality early education is not just an investment in individual children but in the future of society as a whole. Join Early Childhood Education Ethiopia as we work to develop and expand early learning programs and reduce the number of children not enrolled in preschool. We are excited to share a first look inside Early Childhood Education Ethiopia's Community Preschool project in Debre Tabor, Ethiopia! While we are still under construction, this moment fills us with hope and determination. It shows that quality, sustainable, culturally rooted, and developmentally appropriate early education is more than possible, especially in rural communities, where most children do not have access to schooling. Our mission to reach unserved areas is on the right track and with your support, we can continue to turn this vision into a reality for more children. Early Childhood Education Ethiopia is transforming the early learning landscape across the country, focusing on rural areas. We recently held our first meeting of the year with the preschool team at Shimbit Elementary in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. Our long-standing partnership with this team is built on trust, respect, and a shared commitment to creating a more equitable future for children. This mutual goal drives us to continually partner and invest in local schools that make a tangible difference in the lives of children and families every day. During our meeting, we outlined our objectives for the next 10 months, with a strong focus on teacher education, training, and skill development, as well as enhancing the outdoor play and learning environment. The team engaged in meaningful discussions, addressing ongoing challenges, identifying new opportunities, and exploring ways to collaborate more deeply to overcome recurring issues and achieve our key milestones. What truly sets our local meetings apart is the diversity of stakeholders involved. As an organization, we believe everyone should have a voice and a seat at the discussion table. Having teachers, school principals, directors, area supervisors, new hires, assistants, and seasoned professionals present is essential for informed dialogue and effective practice. This meeting was no exception—everyone showed up and contributed valuable insights, openly discussed challenges, and thoughtfully considered each other’s views and perspectives. We deeply value the trust, openness, and collaborative spirit of the Shimbit team. We also commend their recent decision to hire a director for the preschool program, recognizing the importance of focused leadership to the educators, children, and families they serve. We warmly welcome Rahel, the new director of the Shimbit KG program, and look forward to working closely with her to achieve our shared goals. #earlychildhoodeducationethiopia #leadingwithchildren

As an organization, we aim to reduce the number of children out of preschool in rural Ethiopia by 30% in the next five years. While this is a bold initiative, it’s only a starting point. With more than 50% of age-eligible children consistently lacking access to early learning programs, we recognize that there's much more to be done. We have started our journey by constructing a community preschool in Debre Tabor, Ethiopia. The project is now advancing into its second phase of construction. This significant milestone brings us closer to offering quality education to 450 children who would otherwise not have access to preschool. By supporting our efforts, you can play a decisive role in transforming the educational opportunities for countless children by closing the access gap specifically in rural communities. Together, we can push the boundaries and reach even more children in need of a high-quality learning environment and developmentally appropriate early childhood education. • What Does Children's Play Tell Us About How They Learn? Everything! Children learn best through movement, interacting with their environment, and engaging materials that invite curiosity, imagination, and risk-taking. Observing play reveals how children explore and understand their world. Sitting still is not conducive to their learning; in fact, it restricts it. Movement helps them experience and absorb knowledge effectively, allowing them to use their senses to feel, think, taste, see, and hear. One of the joys of early childhood education is seeing children play. Our job is to ensure that we are creating spaces that encourage their innate desire to learn through discovery, inquiry, and curiosity. #earlyeducationethiopia #outdoorlearning #indigenousplay

  • Many factors contribute to hindering individuals from pursuing their education, from early childhood to college. Inequitable circumstances significantly influence these decisions and outcomes. While we acknowledge the challenges, we are committed to ensuring that every person's voice and perspective are heard. By addressing these barriers head-on, we aim to create solutions that eradicate past obstacles and pave the way for a more equitable educational future with our PK-16 educational model. Here is one mother's story that demonstrates how we can bridge the gap of educational inequity, starting with early childhood education. #earlyeducationethiopia

The influential role of fathers in shaping their child's future is undeniable. Let's make sure their voices are heard. We recently sat down with Ato Gashaw Simegn, who had to stop attending school at 6th grade due to a medical condition. He expressed his commitment to ensuring all of his four children receive the education that he was unable to complete. Stories like Ato Gashaw's are widespread across Ethiopia, but we have the opportunity to help him realize his goal. Ato Gashaw spoke of his son Dawit, whom he would enroll in preschool if he had the financial means to do so. His perspective on the importance of early childhood education is truly inspiring, and it serves as a powerful reminder of the valuable Indigenous knowledge that families in rural communities hold. We should always listen to their insights, thoughts, and desires on how to make meaningful interventions, as it helps us avoid deficit approaches and become better at serving them. Creating equitable early education access for children in rural communities is Early Childhood Education Ethiopia's prioritized mission. The Gaffat Community Preschool project in Debre Tabor, Ethiopia, is our flagship initiative for early childhood education. Once completed, this preschool will serve 450 children coming from severely resource-constrained households, equipping them with early concepts, foundational skills, and developmental support to thrive locally and globally.  #earlyeducationethiopia #ruralcommunitypreschool #leadingwithchildren #envision Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g4FaNyuP
