Ethiopian Medical Women's Association
Professional Organizations
We are committed to supporting female physicians and communities
About us
The Ethiopian Medical Women Association is a registered professional association for female physicians working all around the country. The association is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented women in medicine, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians who address the needs of undeserved communities particularly that of women and young girls. Efforts to increase the fair distribution of benefits and responsibilities between women and men are improving these days in the health sector. Women should not only have equal access and opportunity, but should be given the means to utilize these opportunities. The Ethiopian Medical Women’s Association puts a great emphasis on empowering women in medicine, and women in general by setting a specific theme that focuses on various issues. We believe women in medicine have a lot to offer to the sector and hence need every opportunity to amplify their voices and grab the anchor that put them through.

Breast cancer is a growing public health concern globally, affecting women of all ages, with increasing rates in later life. In 2022, 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer, and 670,000 deaths worldwide. While breast cancer is rare in men, accounting for less than 1% of cases, it remains the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women, contributing to 11.7% of new cancer cases and 15% of all cancer deaths. The burden of breast cancer is particularly severe in low- and middle-income countries, where most cases and deaths occur. In Ethiopia, breast cancer is now the leading cancer among women, with 16,133 new cases reported in 2020, and it accounts for one-third of all cancer cases in women. The majority of breast cancer cases in Ethiopia are diagnosed at an advanced stage (stage III or IV), largely due to delays in diagnosis and barriers such as lack of awareness, reliance on traditional medicine, long distances to referral centers, and the high cost of diagnostic services. What can we do to combat these barriers and save millions of lives?
