  • The Ethiopian-Maltese Business Forum will be held for March 11–15, 2024, in Addis Ababa. The Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations (ECCSA) Secretary General Ato Wubie Mengestu met with Chief Executive Officer Anton Buttigieg and Head of TradeMalta Richard Scerri at his office. Both parties discussed about how to take advantage of each other's business potential in order to further develop the relationship of trade and investment between them. TradeMalta is an international business development agency in Malta that was established by the Government of Malta in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry. According to Richard Scerri, Head of TradeMalta, Malta is now working to expand trade and investment prospects in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly with Ethiopia. Mr. Scerri stated that while the nation enjoys good connections with its neighbors in northern Africa, it now needs to forge close ties with nations such as Ethiopia and Ghana. On his side, Ato Wubie Mengestu, the ECCSA secretary general, highlighted Ethiopia's potential for trade and investment with Malta. Furthermore, he said Ethiopian companies are open to Maltese ones and that companies should work together with their counterparts. ECCSA will work to strengthen these relationships through advocacy, capacity building, and connection promotion. According to Mr. Anton, the CEO, Ethiopian businesses would be able to access the European market through Malta, as the country needs to strengthen its relationships with East Africa via Ethiopia. During the conversation, Mr. Anton pointed out that it is advantageous to establish relationships with Ethiopia since it is a country with a large economy and a larger market, and that this is the ideal time to come to Ethiopia in order to strengthen business relationships. The Ethio-Maltese business forum, which will take place in the Addis Ababa Skylight Hotel from March 11–15, 2024, is one of the key events that will strengthen the relationship between the two countries, as was mentioned during the discussion. As the first business forum between the two nations, more than fifteen companies from a variety of industries in Malta, including ICT, agribusiness, construction, healthcare, maritime, and logistics, will be participating. Representatives from around 150 Ethiopian businesses will take part and engage in business-to-business conversations with their Maltese counterparts. As a result, the upcoming March business forum between the two nations will give the opportunity for companies to collaborate and strengthen their partnerships and enhance the countries’ economic relations at large. Malta is a small archipelago in southern Europe, near the coast of North Africa, with a population of about 518,000 people and a developed economy.
