#Enhancing Women's Participation in #RenewableEnergy Investments! Ethiopia's energy sector is rapidly expanding with investments in renewable resources like solar, wind, and hydropower. However, women continue to face significant barriers to participation. To address this issue, the Ethiopian Women in Energy (EWiEn), in collaboration with the UNDP, organized a workshop entitled "Enhancing Women's Participation in Renewable Energy Investments: Policy Pathways" on October 24, 2024, at the Capital Hotel in Addis Ababa. The event brought together stakeholders from government, development agencies, and the private sector to discuss ways for overcoming obstacles to women's involvement in the renewable energy sector. Firehiwot Girma Dires (Ph.D) , EWiEn's Vice Chairperson, opened the workshop by highlighting the EWiEn's progress and highlighting its mission, programmatic areas, and achievements. She emphasized that capacity building and networking opportunities are crucial for narrowing the gender gap in the energy sector. Ato Darge Adenew, UNDP's Program Specialist for Renewable Energy, addressed systemic barriers such as lack of funding, land rights issues, and cultural norms, noting that 600 million people in Africa still lack access to electricity. The workshop featured a panel discussion moderated by Selamawit Beneberu, with experts from the Ministry of Water and Energy, the World Bank, MOD Renewable Energy, and the Development Bank of Ethiopia. They addressed the challenges women encounter in the sector and proposed a way forward to create an enabling environment for women investors. Key points included strengthening land ownership, enhancing training programs, and improving access to loans and investments. Overall, the workshop served as a vital platform for discussing actionable policies to enhance women’s participation in Ethiopia's renewable energy transition. With continued effort and collaboration, there is significant potential for a more gender-inclusive energy sector that empowers Ethiopian women and fosters sustainable development. EWiEn and its partners are dedicated to maintaining this momentum for positive change, successfully achieving the workshop's objectives. Thank you all for your enthusiastic participation!
