Reflecting on Urban Water Management & Sustainability with Water Witness International 🌍 This past weekend, Water Witness International and Green Rotaract Concept Ethiopia brought together passionate experts, leaders, professionals and environmental advocates for a productive and informative discussion on Urban Water Bodies Management and Environmental Sustainability. Inspiring discussions highlighted the importance of water bodies throughout history—from the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt to our own lakeside/riverside cities of Bahir Dar, Hawassa, and Addis Ababa. Dr. Tadesse’s compelling presentation on the Akaki River’s pollution levels served as a critical call to action, urging immediate steps toward sustainable water management. Yet, as Afework Merahi pointed out, many of the solutions mentioned during the panel discussion often focus on mitigation, and the potential solutions ideated for addressing issues caused by urban housing developments are cost-prohibitive. He also emphasized a greater need for preventive solutions, such as developing mini-cities to manage urban migration and reduce pressure on urban resources. The Addis Ababa Water Governance Forum, introduced by Dr. Andualem, is also making promising progress toward collaborative water governance, a vital step for sustainable urban development. During the interactive session, we ideated "crazy solutions" to address pollution in our urban waterways. And our team shall use these crazy solutions as a starting point to designing and implementing innovative and community driven projects. Discussions of Sustainable Urban Food Systems! 🌍 This past Sunday, we had the pleasure of hosting a training session on Urban Sustainable Food Systems led by Dina Kassa kebede, Environmental Scientist and UN Food Systems Coordination Hub Youth Leadership Program Alumna. She shared her experience from the one week training in Ghana about Climate Action Leadership, and challenges opportunities while working to cascade and implement her learnings in Ethiopia. 🌍 Ethiopia Gears Up for COP 29: Engaging Media, Youth, and Civil Society for Climate Action 🌱 On October 26, our Partnership Director had the opportunity to attend a pivotal workshop organized by the @Ethiopian Ministry of Planning and Development. The focus? Preparing Ethiopian stakeholders for impactful engagement at COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku, Azerbaijan. Key Focus Areas by Sector: 🔹 The Ministry Ethiopia aims to secure at least three global partnerships, host over 20 side events, and showcase efforts in climate policy, the Green Legacy initiative, food system transformation, and sustainable cities. In more than 40 planned bilateral meetings, leaders will address climate finance, adaptation, loss and damage, mitigation, and just transition, aligning with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. 🔹 Media With a strong emphasis on education, the media is expected to drive awareness of Ethiopia’s climate change impact, such as the Borena drought, and the significance of carbon markets and Green Legacy’s goals — like the estimated $39 billion needed to meet seedling targets. 🔹 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) CSOs are essential for advocacy, public mobilization, and holding key parties accountable. They bring expertise, represent vulnerable groups, and build coalitions that drive climate action. 🔹 Youth & Influencers Given that 40% of Ethiopia’s population is under 15, youth representation is crucial. The focus is on pre-COP capacity building, collaboration over competition, and developing youth-centered solutions. Panel Insights: Panelists highlighted the importance of continuous stakeholder mapping, consistent year-round engagement, and comprehensive research in climate change efforts to ensure sustained impact and informed action. As we approach COP 29, we look forward to Ethiopia’s proactive role in addressing global climate challenges and fostering collaborations that support our collective goals for sustainability. 🌿 Ps. A Day with Rotaract Clubs of Abocher & Debo This past Sunday was all about connecting and sharing! Green Rotaract Concept spent a meaningful day with the Rotaract Club of Abocher and the Rotaract Club Of Debo in back-to-back sessions focused on working together, exchanging ideas, and deepening our understanding of GRC’s mission for sustainability. During our visit with Rotaract Club of Abocher, we accompanied the Rotaract Ethiopia Peace Campaign on their tour to Abocher, where we got to show what GRC has been working on. It was a great moment to share the progress we’ve made and exchange thoughts on how we can all contribute to positive change in our communities. Later, we sat down with the Rotaract Club of Debo, where Biruk Worku shared valuable insights on waste management and Green technology. We also learned how innovation programs like the ones by Reach for Change Ethiopia are helping people with innovative ideas bring those ideas to life. On October 16, we had an insightful session (workshop and site visit) with Lem Chaka, an organization working towards a sustainable future in Ethiopia. 🌱♻️ They're dedicated to replacing chemical fertilizers with compost based organic fertilizer by 2030 and providing valuable services like training and landscape design. We learned about the benefits of using compost: Preserving soil health Ensuring food security in small spaces Supporting beneficial soil microorganisms The process is simple: Prepare the land Add compost Plant seedlings Monitor and add more compost as needed Key takeaways: Producing compost at a large scale is a journey, but it's worth it! You don't need a lot of land to make compost. Let's make compost production a habit and contribute to a healthier Ethiopia!
