👉 Steel Edging: The Hidden Hero of Katajanokan Laituri What you see is a stunning terrace on top of Katajanokan Laituri in Helsinki, featuring a beautiful blend of Douglas fir planks, lush plant beds, stone pathways, and a workout area. What you don’t see is the steel edging—a critical yet invisible element that holds everything together (picture no. 2). Crafted from galvanized steel in varying heights, this custom edging was designed to accommodate the terrace’s slight tilt, requiring precision at every step. It ensures the soil stays in place, even during heavy rain, preserving the integrity of the design. While it may go unnoticed by the casual observer, once you realize its role – you can’t ignore the importance of this feature. We’re proud to have taken on the challenge of creating this invisible yet vital structure that in this particular location stretches nearly 200 metres beneath your feet. We gladly share our pride in one of our most exciting projects to date! Today, the magnificent Katajanokan Laituri in Helsinki, officially opens its doors. This stunning new building brings together the offices of Stora Enso and the latest addition to the Sokos Hotels family — Hotel Pier 4. 💫 We at ABAU DESIGN are honored to have played our part in this project, particularly on the 5th-floor terrace, which feels more like a serene hilltop garden than a rooftop. With astonishing views of the sea, ferries, and iconic landmarks like the Tuomiokirkko and Uspenski Cathedral, this terrace is truly something special. Our contributions include the steel edgings that are integral to the terrace's design, discreetly holding together the green zones, stone paths, and wooden terrace areas. We helped build the 800 m² terrace: installed the Douglas fir planks, gradually transforming the space, being absolutely unaware of how breathtaking it would eventually turn out to be! The bar area is enhanced with our custom planters, and throughout the terrace, our AITTA benches, made of untreated Finnish larch logs, provide both beauty and comfort. At ABAU DESIGN, our deep connection with nature drives us to create various tree protection solutions for urban spaces across Finland. Trees are essential to our landscapes, and we're proud to offer a variety of designs that not only protect but also enhance their presence. 🌳In Seinäjoki’s schoolyard (picture 1), we designed circular benches with backrests, providing a comfortable spot for kids during breaks while safeguarding the trees at the center. 🌳In Helsinki’s Lyyra complex (picture 2), we created a semi-circular bench that seamlessly integrates with the yard’s steel fence, offering a similar protective solution. 🌳For Kellokoski’s central square (picture 3), we crafted tree grilles and tree guards that protect the roots and trunks of trees while doubling as a sundial — a nod to the location’s signature “time” theme. 🌳In Espoo’s Lagstad schoolyard (picture 4), our AITTA benches mark the future growth spots for trees. We’re excited to revisit the area and see how these trees thrive. 🌳A special mention goes to our project in Hämeenlinna (picture 5), where we repurposed logs from a 19th-century house to create AITTA benches arranged around a tree. These benches not only protect the tree but also carry a piece of history, continuing to serve the community. Whether it's tree guards, tree grilles, benches, or other creative solutions, we're dedicated to designing with sustainability and nature in mind. These shelters feature rainwater drainage through the supporting poles and wire mesh walls for visual spacing with the potential for a green touch with climbing plants. 🚴♂️ Bike Racks for Kivisilta, Kerava (photo 2): In the heart of a city focused on sustainable urban design, our bike racks serve both residents and visitors, seamlessly integrating with the surrounding environment. 🚴♂️ Custom Bike Racks in Pirkkala (photo 3): We created unique bike racks for Pereensaari, each adorned with Pirkkala’s charming mascot, the hedgehog – adding a playful local touch to the outdoor area. 🚴♂️ Leaning Rails for Turku Market Square (photo 4): As part of Turku’s market square major renovation, we designed leaning rails that not only separate bike racks and lanes but also offer additional seating options. This multifunctional solution enhances comfort and usability in this bustling urban space. Whether it’s shelters, racks, or leaning rails, we’re dedicated to making cycling easier, more comfortable, and more enjoyable across Finland. 📣 How can digitalization save the planet? 📣 What are the most successful sustainable practices in urban planning and design? These questions, though challenging, were tackled yesterday by our CEO Ilkka Kankare, Abhishek Kumar D. from EKOTEKT, Alberto Scherb from 100 Thousand Million, Leo Salomaa from Make a BIM, and Loan Cam Tran from Preloved Coffee during a panel discussion organized by Urban Tech Helsinki at the URF festival in Kerava. The session was efficiently moderated by Kaisa Ahonen and highlighted several valuable insights: 🌱 Prioritise People in Urban Planning🌱 Abhishek Kumar, the architect founder of Ekotekt, emphasized that cities should be designed for people, not cars. This approach would result in more green spaces, outdoor activity options, rewarding walking routes, wider and more usable pavements, family-oriented housing, etc. 🌱 Minimise Waste 🌱 Loan Cam Tran from Preloved Coffee highlighted the importance of reducing waste in our daily routines. Her company recycles ground coffee waste into valuable raw materials, showcasing the potential of repurposing waste. She also stressed the importance of educating children about sustainable practices and wiser consumer choices. 🌱 Embrace Innovation 🌱 Ilkka Kankare encouraged everyone to be curious and open to new, more sustainable ways of doing things. Sustainability is not just an intention but should be a daily choice. Supporting businesses that operate using sustainable practices is crucial. 🌱 Start with Small Steps 🌱 Leo Salomaa, whose company Make a BIM provides AI for architecture and construction, suggested taking simple actions first – like, say, lowering your home temperature by one or two degrees during winter. Small changes can have significant impacts both financially and environmentally when practiced by many. 🌱 Promote Sustainability Discussions 🌱 Alberto Scherb, who is passionate about building sustainable homes worldwide with his company 100TM, pointed out that Finland, with Helsinki being one of the most sustainable cities globally, is an ideal place for sustainability talk. Finland’s long-standing commitment to sustainable living provides a strong foundation for such conversations. 🌼 Keravan kaupunki - Kervo stad - City of Kerava itself exemplifies these principles. The city's transformation, particularly in the Muinaisranta area where the URF festival took place, is remarkable. What was a tranquil field just a year ago is now a lively green urban space with a new pond, multiple recreational zones, a walking trail. This is only the beginning, as construction continues to enhance the area further. At ABAU DESIGN, we are proud to have contributed to both the festival and Kerava’s transformation with our furniture.
