Critical Arctic Studies Symposium was held in Rovaniemi in the beginning of October with theme “Thinking with water: Exploring the edges”.   Over twenty participants gathered in Arktikum and several participants joined online during the three days symposium. Keynote speeches were held by Philip Steinberg, UArctic Chair in Political Geography at Durham University, and Solveig Joks, Associate Professor at the Sámi Allaskuvla, Norway.   The event was organized by the UArctic thematic network of Critical Arctic studies in collaboration with two Arctic Centre-based projects:   Post-anthropocentric water relations in the Bothnian Bay: https://bit.ly/3BAdCNS and A Planetary Approach to Global Arctic Politics: https://bit.ly/4h2ZHjS   Thanks to all participants for fruitful discussions!

EN|FI Call for Session Proposals – Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit Conference 2025 The Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit Conference is back on May 5–7, 2025, and we’re now accepting proposals for sessions! This year’s theme, “Elements of Arctic Security,” delves into Arctic security from various angles, including human, environmental, and climate security, as well as hard security. Last week the Arctic Centre had a pleasure to host guests from Italy. Our visiting researcher Marco Volpe and Gianluca Frinchillucci, Director of the Italian Polar Museum presented the special issue of journal “Il Polo” in one of our Afternoon Coffee Chats. Many of our researchers contributed to this issue which highlights the often-overlooked social sciences connections between the Arctic and the Third Pole regions. 

Arktinen keskus vieraili viikonloppuna 4.–5. lokakuuta Kolarin kirjastossa. Tutkijamme esittelivät tiedeviestintätapahtumassa tutkimusalojaan ja kertoivat, mikä innosti heidät alunperin tieteen pariin. Mukana oli ympäristö- ja yhteiskuntatieteilijä Ilona Mettiäinen, lumitutkija Leena Leppänen, oikeushistorian tutkija Juha Joona, tilastotieteitä ja soveltavaa matematiikkaa ympäristö- ja yhteiskuntatutkimuksessa hyödyntävä Henri Wallen sekä tiedeviestijä- ja kirjailija Markku Heikkilä. Tutkijoita haastatteli viestintäasiantuntija Anne Raja-Hanhela. Lisäksi tapahtumassa avattiin biologi Minttu Heimovirran koostama ja nuoren kolarilaisen taitelijan Ella Konkin kuvittama Arktiset supersankarit -näyttely sekä kuultiin Harri Kuusijärven elektronisesti laajennetulla harmonikalla esittämä Arktisia maisemakuvia -teos. Arktinen keskus kylässä -tapahtuma oli osa Kolarin kirjaston ja kulttuuritoimen Tiedon portaat -hanketta. Hanke pyrkii välittämään ajankohtaista tieteellistä tietoa yleistajuisesti ja mielenkiintoisesti kaikenikäisille. Suuri kiitos Kolarin kirjastolle hienosta tapahtumasta! The National Institute for Advanced Studies (NIAS) in Bangalore, India, has appointed Research Professor Kamrul Hossain as an Adjunct Faculty member with the School of Conflict and Security Studies. NIAS has introduced “Polar and Ocean Studies” as one of the new areas of study under the Global Politics program within the School of Conflict and Security Studies. Professor Hossain is expected to play a consultative and advisory role in the Program’s promotion in the international arena. https://lnkd.in/eXQZUYpU

Arktisen keskuksen johtaja Johanna Ikävalko, Suomen saamelaiskäräjien puheenjohtaja Pirita Näkkäläjärvi ja kaupunginjohtaja Ulla-Kirsikka Vainio City of Rovaniemi kirjoittavat Helsingin Sanomien Vieraskynässä Suomen arktisesta politiikasta – tai pikemminkin sen puutteesta. Great panel today at the 17th Polar Law Symposium in Östersund, Sweden, on “climate change and the polar regions: socio-legal dynamics” organized by Kamrul Hossain and chaired by Timo Koivurova. I had the pleasure of presenting some preliminary research on the relationship between science and law in the Polar regions by analyzing the 1980 Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (#CCAMLR) and the 2018 Agreement to Prevent Unregulated High Seas Fisheries in the Central Arctic Ocean (#CAOFA) through an analytical framework I developed based on the concepts of hierarchy, dependence, and symbiosis. UArctic (University of the Arctic) Thematic Network on Critical Arctic Studies (CAS) is an activity led by the Arctic Centre, established in 2021. Its aim is to strengthen and promote multidisciplinary, critical studies of the Arctic. CAS Network also has an active blog.
